Meet Josiah Jones | Photographer & Content Creator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Josiah Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Josiah, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Starting my own photography business didn’t become a thought until the beginning of 2024. As a child, I was always the subject in front of the camera whether it was modeling for magazines or simply being a photogenic kid for family. As I grew older, I continued to be the subject because I played basketball in high school and possessed an interest in fashion. I purchased my first camera with the intent of just making photos of me look better. After I received my camera, I started taking portraits of family and friends. I quickly became more interested in capturing the best of others than taking pictures of myself. The more I took pictures, the more I realized the significance of what I was doing. I realized that I was responsible for making memories last and seeing others happy with the final product. The more positive feedback I received, the more confidence I grew to take the risk of investing more into photography equipment and start my own business. I am glad I took this risk because photography ended up being a creative outlet and passion for me.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me apart is my collaborative and creative spirit. I like to work with people and hear their visions of how they want their photos to look. I like to go beyond their expectations by adding my own creative flare and input whether it is subtle or bringing to life a new aspect in the photo. The main factors that pushed me to where I am today in my business are my faith in God, consistency, and open mindedness.
Some advice and a lesson I have learned is to “Keep shooting”. This phrase can easily be taken lightly but consistency and practice is key to improving. Bringing my camera with me to various events put me in different situations to improve my skills while creating images for others.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them out to eat at either Coneheads in East Nashville or Bag Lady’s in North Nashville. These two restaurants are unique in their own ways and I would want my friend to try something new. I would also visit Fort Negley, which is a park behind the Adventure Science Center. This would give us a place to relax at outside as well as a good view of the city including the buildings downtown.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost, I want to give a shoutout and thank God for gifting me my abilities and surrounding me with people that support me. Next, I would like to shout out my parents, Susan Tucker-Jones and Deaderick Jones for encouraging me through the years. I want to also Larry Brent for being a great friend and support with being the subject of my first photoshoot and Chandler Hollis for keeping me motivated. Along with Larry and Chandler, I want to give a shoutout to my other brothers of Build Institute and sisters of Bloom Academy for support shown throughout my collegiate years.
