Meet Josh Washam | Singer / Songwriter / Producer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Josh Washam and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Josh, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
The way I see it, its not really a choice. I feel lucky that I was brought up in a very musical family. Lots of instruments and creative encouragement. First I would learn guitar parts and play songs I liked. It wasn’t long until I tried to write my own. Once I had a batch of songs, I figured I would try and record them. Really, that’s all I’ve been doing ever since.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve always been a DIY kind of person. I feel right at home in the creative process writing and producing my own music. Even graphic design stuff and screen printing my own shirts and merch. Being a one man shop, my music/art has a unique, home grown quality. I’m the only filter. If it sounds that way, its because I wanted it too. There’s really nothing to hide behind. My weakness, like most artists, is the business side of things. Being self sufficient and independent, the creation of the art is the easy part. Properly releasing it into the world is a whole different skill set. I have always released my music on my own, to modest numbers. The struggle is getting the songs heard. The challenge is to not be so independent and find folks who can help.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Nashville is constantly growing and changing. I’m a sucker for a cool music store/record shop and we have some of the best in the world here. The live music is awesome no matter where you go. Theres lots of good hiking and nature just outside the city too.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’ve been apprenticing at MacMillan Guitars for a while. Marty has been great teacher and building instruments has become a really fun part of my story. The satisfaction of luthier work is very similar to writing and recording a song. Playing my songs on the instruments I’ve built has been really cool. As a learning tool, I made some ukuleles to the same standards as the guitars we build. These are not your average ukes. As a promotion for my new record, WAXHAW DR. coming out October 22nd, I’m raffling off a Walnut Tenor Ukulele. It’s been a fun way to get a high end uke into someones hands.
