Meet Joseph Pieper | Lead Singer & Guitarist of The Relics

We had the good fortune of connecting with Joseph Pieper and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joseph, what is your end goal for your band?
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The Relics music is different than other artists in that we combine elements of classic rock and mix it with modern rock. The big thing that made rock music of the past so special was the melodic integrity of the music. That’s something that in many ways has been lost in recent years. Now days a lot of rock music is more about “vibe” or “feel” than it is about the actual melody. And that can be really cool, but the music I grew up listening was bands like The Beatles, The Who, Queen, Green Day, and Oasis. All of which had music that was incredibly catchy and melodic. And that’s what we try to do with our music. We try to make music that’s so catchy the first time you hear it you can sing along to, and you can actually remember the melody. We strive to do that with every single song we write.
It’s taken a lot to get where we are today. It’s taken a lot of switching members out, trial and error, practice, and just plain out hustle to move this band forward. I’ve learned that it is very rare for things to go according to plan, so you have to constantly be on your toes and ready to adapt to keep things moving forward. No matter what the set back is you have to keep moving forward, If you sit around and feel sorry for yourself you’re done. You have to keep things moving. And that’s what I’ve done as leader of this band any time we’ve had a set back.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If they were visiting me in Woodstock, I would say let’s go to downtown Woodstock. There’s lots of fun bars and restaurants there to hang out and there’s also a fun park there. I love going there!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Our producer John Briglevich has done a tremendous job producing our music. He has always captured our artistic aspirations and has never failed in making us sound great. We love working with him!
We also really appreciate the top music venues that we consistently play at like MadLife Stage in Woodstock, GA, Smith’s Olde Bar (Atlanta), The Masquerade (Atlanta), The Hummingbird (Macon), JBA (Macon), The Mill on Etowah (Canton, GA), and Preservation Pub (Knoxville, TN). These venues have all been our hot spots for these past 5 years.
Joe Warren has also been a huge resource for us. He’s booked us to open for several major touring artists like Radkey, Seven Year Witch, and The Velveteers. He’s also been a great mentor to me about how to grow our band. He’s been a great friend!
And last but not least our fans. We could not do this if we didn’t have such a great supportive fan base. They are the ones who stream our music, and they are the ones who go to our shows. Our last show at MadLife was so surreal for me to see the room completely packed with our fans. It was truly a special moment that I will never forget.
