We had the good fortune of connecting with Joey Diehl and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joey, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
Ive always thought that the age-old sentiment of ‘failure builds character’ meant that I had to look forward to messing things up a thousand times before I got it right. How can someone look forward to doing that I thought. Its something that took a very long process to understand, but truly (as cliche as it sounds), allowing myself to fail and not to falter because of it I think is the best habit I ever learned! I’ve messed up some pretty big gigs, but because of it, I’ve succeeded in some even bigger gigs because I knew what not to do. It was hard to understand that the concept of experience came from working through failures. So don’t be afraid to fail!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As an audio engineer, my career is defined by a passion for crafting immersive auditory experiences. What sets me apart is not just technical proficiency but the ability to merge it with artistic vision, enhancing the impact of every project.

The journey hasn’t been easy. Overcoming challenges involved a commitment to continuous learning and staying ahead in a dynamic industry. One key lesson learned is the power of collaboration. Working closely with people who I respect and industry professionals has enriched my perspective and expanded my creative horizons. Collaboration with musicians and producers taught me the importance of effective communication and understanding diverse project requirements.

In essence, my story is fueled by a passion for perfection, continuous learning, and a deep appreciation for the transformative power of sound.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If you’re coming to Nashville for the first time, you gotta take a stroll down Broadway! Pick a weekend and I guarantee you’ll never experience something quite the same. Its a blend of every crazy thing you can think of all in one place.

Once you wake up a couple days later, then the rest of the city becomes alive. There’s an incredible array of food choices as well as music options. The level of musicianship displayed by the lowest grade performers in Nashville is something that can’t be described very easily. There are so many good musicians in Nashville that play everything you can think of.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a big shoutout to a whole wealth of mentors. An unwavering support by a community who has invaluable guidance and belief in my abilities have been instrumental in shaping my success and navigating the twists and turns of my journey.

I also want to acknowledge the incredible camaraderie within the Nashville audio scene where the collaborative spirit has fueled innovation. A special nod to my colleagues, Pat Tarpey and Noah Needleman, whose joint efforts have made a significant impact on my professional growth.
