We had the good fortune of connecting with Joe Jarvis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joe, what inspires you?
I’m inspired by so many things! Maybe it’s a sermon I’ve heard from church, a tv show, a good book, a conversation with a friend, etc! One of my favorite things I try to do at least once a year is to take a retreat. For a few days I go somewhere more remote by myself. I don’t pick up the phone, I stay off the internet and I just let myself be. The first hour or so is an adjustment from my busy life, but then I find what I’ve been looking for. All of a sudden, I feel peace that I haven’t felt in a while. I reconnect with God, I finally finish a book I’ve been working on or write a song! I feel inspired by stillness, especially the kind you only find in nature with a peaceful mind.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am an award-winning Christian artist from Metro Detroit.

Making music is one of the most fun things I can think of. My brain is always bursting with new ideas for melodies, lyrics, and concepts. But more than just creating art for art’s sake, I do it for a purpose. I want my songs to personally connect with people over the airwaves and to make their lives just a little bit better. I want to let them know that somebody else has been through what they’ve been through, that they’re not too far gone, that they matter, that there’s always hope for tomorrow… that there’s a God who loves them more than they could ever imagine. That’s my purpose, my drive to continue marching forward in my career and life.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There are so many wonderful things to do in and around the Motor City. You can go play retro arcade machines and see strange oddities at Marvin’s Mechanical Museum, listen to a spectacular symphony at the elegant Detroit Opera House, or see music history on display at the Motown Museum. Only one thing better than “seeing” around the city is “tasting” around the city!
A must-taste Detroit staple is the Yardbird sandwich at Slows BBQ in downtown Detroit. Or you can just grab a coney dog of your choosing at any of the numerous coney islands scattered around the city. Not to forget, Bucharest Grill, which is best known for the tastiest, most generously-portioned shawarmas you’ve ever had in your life!
Detroit eats always make this foodie extra “Smiley” every time!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My success is largely attributed to so many people who have mentored me and believed in me before I believed in myself. Being a Christian music artist isn’t a traditional career path. Despite this, from the age of 16, I knew what I wanted to do with my life. My friends and family have supported me and helped me grow. Both my parents have always been behind me 100%, so I have to give them a big shout-out! My mom, in particular, being a vocal coach and music manager by trade, has influenced me and even mentored me in the business and craft of my career.

In addition to family and friends, my church pastors, Pastor Brooks McElhenny and Pastor James Loruss, took time out of their busy schedules to help me grow, and provided opportunities for me to use my talents.

Lastly, I honed my craft with John Chisum and Robert Till, industry veterans of the Christian music scene. When going through their program at Nashville Christian Songwriters, they went above and beyond to give me so many essential tools I now use daily in my songwriting and performances.
