We had the good fortune of connecting with Jenn Bostic and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jenn, why did you pursue a creative career?
Music has always been a big part of my life. My parents did a great job of making sure the arts were accessible to my brother and me. Attending concerts, musicals, and spending time gathered together around Dad’s guitar are some of my favorite childhood memories. Unfortunately, at ten years old, I was in a car accident that took my dad with it. Music allowed me to feel close to him after he was gone. Songwriting quickly became the therapy that helped me process what I was feeling. Somehow what I couldn’t express through speech, came flowing out of me in melody and lyric. I threw myself into everything musical, eventually attending Berklee College of Music to study Music Education, in hopes of becoming a high school choir director. I was passionate about helping others find the same outlet I had found through music. Upon graduation, everything in my heart pushed me to go to Nashville, where I currently reside. A few years into living here, I wrote a song with Jimmy Fortune and Zach Runquist that finally captured everything I needed to say about losing my dad. To my surprise, God used that song to open some life changing doors, including the opportunity to perform overseas, as well as on the stages of The Grand Ole Opry and The Ryman Auditorium. I feel incredibly blessed to create and share music for a living, it truly is a dream come true.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My music crosses many different genres (blame my love of all things music), but some of the best adjectives to describe my catalog as a whole would be “piano drive, emotive, soulful.” My faith in God is very important to me, and my latest album “You Find a Way” is a Contemporary Christian album, however, in previous albums, the lyrical content has surrounded themes of faith, overcoming, and positivity. With albums ranging from Country to pop to gospel to blues, I write from personal experiences or stories that inspire me. I try not to concern myself too much with which genre the song I’m currently writing will fit into and focus on writing the best song possible that excites me musically. Sharing those songs and feeling a point of connection with an audience is a feeling like no other. When I’ve been honest in the writing room, people resonate, and if I can help one person know they aren’t alone in whatever they might be facing through a song, that’s a win. It has been a path full of hills and valleys, but I’m so grateful I wake up and do what I love every single day.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love Nashville! I would start with a coffee from Crema, followed by a walk in beautiful Shelby Park, meals at Butchertown Hall (queso!), Emmy Squared, and/or Virago, followed by live music at either The Listening Room Cafe or The Bluebird Cafe.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am incredibly grateful to have had many supporters, mentors, and friends influence and encourage this journey. My mom has always been my biggest cheerleader, and my husband has been an amazing partner who has taken many a promo photo and patiently holds down the fort when I’m on the road. Jay Frank was the first person outside of my family to really champion the music. He signed me to my first publishing deal in 2011 and was an incredible mentor and friend. He taught me so much about being an independent artist. Lauren Christy, hit songwriter and Grammy nominated producer, is the other mentor in my life. We wrote and recorded my latest album, “You Find a Way” together. The sisterhood that was born from the very first day we met can be described as nothing else but a divine connection. I am so grateful for these beautiful relationships and so many more God has brought into my life.
