We had the good fortune of connecting with Javian Shipley and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Javian, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
After having my daughter in 2022, following years of struggling with PCOS and infertility, I expected to return to my work in community engagement. I had spent my career in urban education, nonprofits, and faith-based spaces, serving communities I deeply cared about. However, after two years of foster parenting and welcoming my daughter, my perspective shifted. I realized I wanted a better work-life balance—one that allowed me to be present for my children and pursue work that brought joy rather than constant heaviness for a season. What began as a personal outlet soon became a business idea. I talked to my husband and decided to transform my passion for creating beautiful experiences into a business that allows me to both focus on my family and help others build lasting memories. After years of working to prevent painful experiences, I found that creating joyful ones is equally meaningful and fulfilling.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Beauty in Bloom Events is an event planning and styling company that my husband and I launched less than a year ago. We specialize in event planning + styling, luxury picnics, boutique event rentals, and custom balloon installations. Our goal is to bring our clients’ Pinterest dreams to life without them having to juggle multiple vendors, invest in costly backdrops or tables, or spend hours learning a new DIY skill. We offer a seamless, stress-free experience, handling everything from design to execution so our clients can simply enjoy their event.

What truly sets us apart is our dedication to crafting cohesive, stylish experiences that reflect our clients’ vision while taking the stress off their shoulders. As a husband and wife team, Joshua and I share a passion for DIY transformations and entertaining. We’ve always believed in cherishing life’s good moments, and that’s why we’re so committed to helping families and clients create lasting memories.

Starting this business has been an exciting journey, though not without challenges—especially after learning I was expecting again shortly after we launched. Balancing business growth and family life has taught us to be flexible, patient, and focused on our passion for creating joyful moments. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that doing work that brings beauty and happiness to others is incredibly rewarding.

At Beauty in Bloom Events, our mission is to help families and clients celebrate their special moments with style and ease, and I’m excited to continue expanding our services and growing in this creative space.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend came to visit for five days, I’d make sure we hit all my favorite Memphis spots and had a mix of good food, fun, and memorable experiences.

Day 1:
We’d start with breakfast at Sunrise Memphis—their biscuits and gravy are the perfect way to kick off the trip. Then, we’d walk off the meal at Big River Crossing, taking in the beautiful views of the Mississippi River. For dinner, we’d dive into some classic Memphis flavor at Gus’s Fried Chicken. It’s a must for anyone visiting.

Day 2:
We’d head to The Lookout at Bass Pro for a breathtaking view of the city and river. Afterward, lunch would be at Babalu in Overton Square for tacos and fresh guacamole. Later, we’d spend the evening relaxing at Loflin Yard with live music, good food, and a laid-back vibe.

Day 3:
A picnic at Shelby Farms would be a perfect way to enjoy the outdoors, maybe with a paddle boat ride on the lake. In the evening, we’d grab a casual dinner at Crazy Noodle—they serve up some of the best ramen around.

Day 4:
We’d visit the National Civil Rights Museum, which is always a powerful experience. If kids are with us, we’d swap it for the Children’s Museum, which is a lot of fun for everyone. Dinner would be a classic BBQ feast, either at Central BBQ for nachos or Rendezvous.

Day 5:
To end the trip on a high note, we’d go to a Grizzlies game at FedEx Forum!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have had the best support from fellow business owners who have given me wisdom, encouragement, and shared experiences. Megan Epps from Modern Little Events in Nashville, TN. Jordan Kingsley from Kingsley Party Rentals in Cincinnati, Ohio. Kianah Moore from KWN Designs, and Chynna Barows from The Party Elevators in Knoxville, TN. Each of these women owned businesses has played a vital role in giving me the confidence, tools, and encouragement I needed to start this business.
