Meet Jake Duel | Dog Trainer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jake Duel and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jake, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Transparency and fair pricing.
My methods are on full display on my social media as well as at my weekly public group classes. Feel free to come and spectate if you’d like to see! Nothing is hidden, doctored or edited beyond what is reasonable.
It’s incredibly important to not get lost down the social media rabbit hole and feel like you’re not making enough progress. Dog training progress, like anything else, is not linear. It’s a core principle of mine to showcase that to the clients.
Fair pricing is an essential part of Greenhouse Canine. No one should be excluded from receiving quality training based on income. No one should have to take out a loan to train their dog.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Dog training is a largely unregulated profession, meaning that anyone can become a trainer and print out some business cards.
Many of my clients come to me after seeing 3-4 trainers. Good training is hard to find these days unfortunately.
In 2019, after managing a dog walking company, I graduated from Starmark Academy in Austin, Texas. This is where I began my dog training journey and learned the basic foundation to become a trainer.
From there I went through several internships including those in detection, behavior modification and protection training. Since then I’ve held training positions in New York, Memphis and Nashville while working closely with many rescues, shelters and vet offices.
Most people who get into dog training do it out of their love for dogs. That is certainly a prerequisite, but not all that is needed. Learning how to balance the business side, having hard conversations with clients and rough days with dogs is often the reality of the job. I do this job because I love dogs, but I’m good at this job because I can help clients through the tough days, not just the good ones.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Having just moved to Old Hickory, I’ve loved showing people around the town and some of the hidden charm it has.
East Nashville tends to be my stomping ground after previously living there. I’m a big fan of SS GAI and their Thai fried chicken. I eat there much more than I’d like to admit!
Nashville has some wonderful nature trails and hikes. One of my favorite spots are the trails at Fontanel. About 15 minutes from East Nashville, it offers some great opportunities to swim and hike.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to thank Wags and Walks for helping me get in front of so many dogs and owners that can benefit from training. They’re a wonderful rescue organization that is worth checking out and donating to!
A big shout out to Riley Barnes, a training colleague and friend, who has helped me get this business off of the ground. I wouldn’t be able to help so many dogs without her being there to bounce good…and bad ideas off of!
Thank you to the clients who show up week after week to classes and training sessions. We’ve built an incredibly tight-knit and trusting community where we feel comfortable making mistakes and pushing each other to have better relationships with our dogs.
Most importantly, thank you to Sterling. You’re there for me every day and are the true face of Greenhouse Canine. You’re the reason this is all possible.
