We had the good fortune of connecting with Jaimie Monger and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jaimie, what makes you happy? Why?
What makes me happy is the freedom to express myself authentically. This freedom allows me to embrace my individuality and communicate my unique perspective on life and the world around me. Whether it’s through my sometimes ostentatious appearance, creating fun and inviting spaces, or crafting larger-than-life artwork, I find joy in the creative process of blending patterns, colors, and textures. Each piece I create serves as a canvas for me to craft statements about who I am and what I believe in. What I love most about expression is its liberating nature; it enables me to convey complex ideas and emotions without the need for words. Through art and design, I find fulfillment in sharing my innermost thoughts and feelings with others, fostering connections and understanding on a deeper level.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am immensely proud of the opportunities I’ve had to share my art with the world over the past few years. However, this journey was not without its challenges. For the longest time, I was held back by fear — fear of judgment, fear of inadequacy, and fear of not being understood. I doubted whether I could ever make a living from my art or have the courage to exhibit it publicly. But through introspection, I realized that this fear had become a constant presence in my life, stifling my potential for growth and happiness.

One pivotal moment changed everything. A person looked at one of my pieces and, after a long, nerve-wracking pause, tearfully described the anguish and anxiety I had been grappling with for decades. In that moment, I felt truly seen and understood in a way that words alone could never convey. As a woman of color, I’ve often felt marginalized and unheard, especially when it comes to expressing my emotions. But through my art, I discovered a powerful medium of communication that transcends barriers.

My journey to where I am today professionally has been anything but easy. It required confronting my deepest fears, embracing vulnerability, and finding the courage to share my authentic self with the world. Along the way, I’ve learned invaluable lessons about resilience, self-acceptance, and the transformative power of art.

What I want the world to know about me and my story is that art has the ability to bridge divides, spark conversations, and amplify voices that are often marginalized. My art is a reflection of my lived experiences, emotions, and identity as a woman of color. Through it, I hope to inspire others to embrace their own truths, break free from societal constraints, and find solace in self-expression

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
For a week-long trip with my best friend, I’d aim to strike a perfect balance between cozy moments at home and exciting adventures around town. We’d kick off our time together with a laid-back backyard barbecue, complete with classic board games and a movie marathon.

To add some excitement, we’d venture downtown to Riverside Drive for an afternoon of roller skating and soaking in the vibrant atmosphere by the river. While there, we’d make a stop at the Broom Closet for a bit of whimsy, getting our fortunes read and perhaps picking up a mystical rock or two as souvenirs.

Of course, no trip would be complete without indulging in delicious food. We’d head to Poplar Ave, where the diverse culinary scene ensures there’s something to satisfy every craving. Along the way, we’d make a detour to the Art Center to stock up on crafting supplies for a potential paint and sip evening back at the house.

As the week draws to a close, we’d save the best for last with a visit to Tone for an artsy night out, immersing ourselves in the local creative scene and enjoying the vibrant energy of the city. With a mix of cozy moments and exciting adventures, it would be a trip to remember for years to come.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to extend a shoutout to the wonderful individuals at Self-Tucker Architects. This firm provided me with my initial opportunity in the field of architecture as an intern, and their support has been instrumental in shaping my creative journey. At Self-Tucker, I learned invaluable lessons about the significance of community involvement, perseverance, and hard work. They not only nurtured my professional growth but also stood by me during significant milestones, such as my very first solo art show at Eclectic Eye. Their unwavering encouragement and belief in my abilities have fueled my determination to pursue my goals in both art and design. I am deeply grateful to my Self-Tucker family for their inspiration, mentorship, and camaraderie. Their influence has left an indelible mark on my story, and I am truly humbled to have crossed paths with such a talented and supportive group of individuals.
