Meet Jah Frida | Independent Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jah Frida and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jah, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk is a part of any journey you embark on. You can never know how things will turn out or where you’ll end up, however nobody has ever done anything great without risk. As an independent artist in this day and age, I’m constantly faced with dilemmas that challenge my journey and can fog sight of pursuing my dreams, as corny as it sounds. At the end of day I only have one life, and I’d rather risk my resources and time towards chasing happiness, rather than have the looming question of, “what if?”.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m proud of where I’m at today with my career, coming from Dallas, TX, to Nashville, and now Los Angeles. Never did I think that I would be where I’m at today because of the fact that my journey has not been a straight line forward, but rather one with twists and turns. It has not been easy, actually quite the opposite. Nothing good comes easy though, and I keep that in mind every day as I pave my own path as an Artist.
The thing I’ve learned since first releasing music in 2018 is that nobody can do me better than me. It sounds obvious, but today so much of what we hear is just an imitation of something that is original. People don’t often strive to be original of true to themselves, so I really try to be as vulnerable as possible in my music. People don’t take risks with their sound or image even. I don’t say that to knock anybody but the people that inspire me most are authentically themselves. If you listen to my music, then you’re taking in the spectrum of my emotions and experiences. I really don’t hold back. I create because it’s therapeutic, but also because there is no better feeling in the world than when you make something that you’re so proud of. I’m constantly chasing that lightening in a bottle.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The funny thing is I’ve created this itinerary many times for friends who have visited. I like to show my friends the things that are unique to Nashville. That usually will be something like Southern food, Hot Chicken joints, and my other favorite hole in the wall places around town. But no trip in Nashville is complete without live music so whether I’m playing a live show, or a friend is, I’ll try to show them the local scene that isn’t displayed for the world to see. And definitely one night on Broadway, you gotta experience it at least once.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wouldn’t be anywhere I am today without the support from my friends and loved ones. These are the people that help me find clarity in what I’m doing, and keep me in check. I’m the kind of creative who loves to share my art and get honest opinions from those whose taste I trust. There have been many decisions that I’ve made after having long and in depth conversations about my art. It’s important to have a vision but having people around me who can see that vision and help me get there is so important. I don’t take any of these people for granted and am so grateful to have someone beyond myself who believes in what I do.
