We had the good fortune of connecting with Heather Nigro and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Heather, what role has risk played in your life or career?

The risk is in the risk not taken. If you’re not taking chances or investing in yourself, who else will? These are things I’ve had to face each time I’ve taken another step forward in my journey. I’ve never regretted the risks I’ve taken, and many times only wish I’d done it sooner.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a photographer and creative director working in the fields of fashion, fine-art, music, and portraiture. My journey with photography began as a teenager, experimenting with film in the darkroom. Entirely self-taught, I paired her love of music with photography by bringing her camera to clubs in New York City, capturing musicians who would later become legends. My most recent focus is on highly stylized, intimate photos inspired by narratives from my journey in which I have models portray an event from my life story or a social message of importance to me. My process is meticulous — I carefully sourcing and selecting locations, styling, and production. Transcending beyond the lens, I feel my visual stories break through barriers to evoke emotions and engage the viewer deeper, inviting them into my most intimate and private world. My work has been featured in international publications, including magazines such as Harpers Bazaar, Glamour, Billboard, Spin, Wonderland, Relix, album covers, and in the private homes of collectors.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

I love the eclectic nature of East Nashville and all that it has to offer, especially:

No Quarter: Pinball at it’s finest for those of us who don’t mind tilting the night away and know the art of the nudge.

Chopper Tiki: Flaming drinks in tiki glasses, what else could one ask for?

One Upon a Time in France: Unpretentious French dining in a cozy atmosphere.

Hearts: My favorite spot for lunch, healthy, Australian fare.

Dose: Coffee and lite bites, a good spot to work and socialize.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?

Friends who are my chosen and creative family and stood by me when I couldn’t stand up for myself. Their unwavering love, support, encourgement and phone calls (at any hour) gave me the strength to keep going. Thank you Danielle, Jennifer, Francesca, Craig, Lindsay, Chris, David, Brendan, Waison, Evan, Stephanie, Sabrina, Marcus, Donna and Dickey. You have no idea how much your support means to me that it’s hard to put into words, so I’ll let my pictures do the talking.
