We had the good fortune of connecting with Gypsy Nix and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gypsy, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I pursued an artistic career because I’ve always known I wasn’t meant for a desk job. The variety in my work excites me—no two days are ever the same, which keeps my creativity alive. But more than that, there’s something deeply fulfilling about helping people feel better about how they look. It gives me a strong sense of purpose and accomplishment.

What should our readers know about your business?
As a suite owner, my primary goal is to ensure that every client not only feels comfortable but truly welcomed. I’ve worked hard to create a space where relaxation is the priority, and each visit feels like a retreat. I let my clients set the tone—whether they want to chat and share their day or simply unwind in peace with some music. While I focus on bringing their vision for their hair to life, I’m just as committed to helping them release the stress they carry.

Winning Best Hairstylist in the Collierville Independent was an incredible validation for me. It wasn’t just about my technical skills; it confirmed that I was also creating an experience that resonated with my clients. Being ranked in the top 3 hairdressers in the Memphis Flyer further boosted my confidence, showing me that I could successfully support myself as a suite owner.

Like many, I’ve faced challenges, especially with the economy, but my clients’ loyalty has been my anchor. Their continued support has been the reason I’ve been able to navigate tough times and emerge stronger. I am so grateful for the trust they place in me—it means the world.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
You’ll have to pardon my long response. This is one of my favorite topics! I have thoughts- If my best friend came to Memphis for a week, I’d plan a fun, food-filled itinerary with plenty of music, history, and relaxation—no hiking or biking involved!

Day 1: Start with breakfast at Brother Juniper’s for amazing omelets. Then, visit the National Civil Rights Museum to dive into history. Grab BBQ at Central BBQ, followed by a stroll down Beale Street with live music and drinks at Ghost River.

Day 2: Brunch at The Arcade (those sweet potato pancakes!) and then a tour of Sun Studio to soak up Memphis’ music legacy. Ride the elevator at the Bass Pro Pyramid for drinks with a view, then devour spicy chicken at Gus’s. Wind down with cocktails at Loflin Yard.

Day 3: Coffee at Bluff City Coffee and a chill walk around the South Main District to admire street art. Visit Overton Park and check out the Brooks Museum, then indulge in dinner at The Beauty Shop in Cooper-Young. End the night lounging at Railgarten with a drink.

Day 4: Dive into Elvis’ world with a tour of Graceland. Later, explore the Stax Museum for some soul history, and have dinner at the hidden gem Itta Bena, above B.B. King’s on Beale.

Day 5: Sleep in, then enjoy lunch at Cheffie’s and a leisurely visit to the Memphis Botanic Garden. Wrap up with Italian at Bari and craft cocktails at Alchemy in Cooper-Young.

Day 6: Breakfast at Cafe Eclectic with a side of pastries. Head to the Pink Palace Museum and take your time exploring Crosstown Concourse, a super cool space with art and great food. Dinner at Andrew Michael Italian Kitchen, with live music at Levitt Shell.

Day 7: Brunch at Flight with mimosas and then a laid-back visit to the Memphis Zoo. Finish the week with a memorable dinner at Porch and Parlor.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I owe so much to my clients—they’re the reason I continue to love what I do. Beyond just doing their hair, I genuinely enjoy hearing about their lives, their families, and being part of their personal journeys.

My deepest gratitude goes to my foster parents, Bobby and Suzan Gaston, for taking me out of a difficult situation and setting me on a path toward security and success. Without their guidance, I wouldn’t have realized my potential.

My husband, Michael, has been my rock, providing the confidence and unwavering support I needed to take the leap into suite ownership.

To my kids, I’m endlessly grateful for their patience with my schedule and for understanding when I couldn’t be at every event. Their support has meant the world to me.

Lastly, a huge thank you to Gould’s Salon and Spa for shaping me as a hairstylist and providing the foundation that allowed me to grow into the businesswoman I am today.
