We had the good fortune of connecting with Greta Hollar and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Greta, why did you pursue a creative career?
When I graduated college, I went to work for the state government. I loved the people I worked with and the team environment but didn’t enjoy the work I was doing. I did social media for the state’s insurance programs and there were only so many exciting ways to tell people to use their dental benefits before the year. So while working at the state I started my blog. It was a weekend project and I’d write about the outfits I was wearing and would write travel guides for places I had been. It wasn’t long before I left my 9-5 to pursue a creative career full time. Some people aren’t cut out for corporate jobs and hours and need a creative job to feel fulfilled. While being self employed is stressful and I may not make as much money as I would at a regular job but I wake up feeling fulfilled and excited to work.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
One thing that sets me apart in my work is that I’m a Nashville Native or a “unicorn”. When I write and post about Nashville, I know the best things to do and places to go. When people visit Music City, I don’t want them to simply do the “touristy” or “instagrammable” things, I really want them to experience the city, find the places that have a story and make this place special. I love Nashville with all my heart and it makes me so happy when people tell me they visited a spot I recommended and had an amazing experience and they can see the city through my eyes.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m all about experiences and quality time! I’d start in the Gulch at Milk & Honey for coffee and breakfast. Then we’d either go to Paddywax and make a candle or Rustler Hat Co. to customize a hat. Then I’d head to 5th & Broad for lunch. You could eat at Assembly Food Hall or at Slim & Husky’s for some amazing pizza. While at 5th & Broad take in the view from the Skydeck or the 12/30 club. You could also go to Lip Lab to make your own color lipstick! From there you could hit up a few pop-up bars at The Dream, Fairlane Hotel, or Noelle. Then we’d hit up a Predators game followed by karaoke at the Wild Beaver or Santa’s Pub. Of course there would be some hot chicken in there from Prince’s or a delicious burger from the Pharmacy.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Life has been a little off this year. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in June and without my husband, mother, family and friends I don’t know what would have happened. They deserve all the credit with keeping me going and my spirits high!
