We had the good fortune of connecting with Erin Thurman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Erin, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Starting my own photography business has been so much fun. At first, I was very clueless. Photography just seemed like an exciting hobby. I honestly didn’t even know how to work my own camera. I don’t think I ever thought of photography as a business. I just thought taking photos of friends and family would be a fun thing to do, but when I started booking sessions I realized where I could take it. Along the way it has taken tons of time and effort to get where I am today. I have taken classes, went to many styled shoots, second shot for amazing photographers, and asked my photographer friends thousands of questions. There is so much that goes into photography. Technology is always changing and upgrading, so that means photographers are always learning new things and trying to stay ahead of the game.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Looking back to where I started to now, I feel so proud of myself. You can just tell by scrolling to the very beginning of my instagram page that I was brand new and had never picked up a camera before. When I decided that I could actually make this hobby into a business, I knew I needed to get serious about it and learn all the ends and outs of my camera and editing. I researched online classes, watched YouTube videos, and started asking people if they would let me take their photos. I spent a lot of time taking photos of family members or friends who didn’t mind me practicing and trying out all of my camera settings. Once I finally grasped the camera, I moved onto editing. I knew I liked the light and airy look. I wanted my photos to be timeless and not trendy. I want my clients to look back on photos years from now and continue to enjoy them. Once I figured out my goal of an editing style, I took an online course from photographers that have the same style I was trying to achieve. I have worked and worked on my editing style and still continue to tweak it to this day, but I can finally say I love it and I am so happy with where I have came. I still have a lot of learning to do!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Here in Bowling Green, Kentucky, we have so many great food options! For lunch, Griff’s Deli is hands down my favorite. Then after lunch, I am always in need of an afternoon pick-me-up. We would head over to Q Coffee Emporium and grab a Cinnamon Pecan Latte. I am a lover of fashion and home decor! My favorite stores in BG are Lulu’s Fine Home Furnishings, Back Down South, and Heart Strings.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Keely Nicole Photography has helped me tremendously. She is such a great person and an amazing photographer. She sends me tutorials, answers questions, and has photographed my husband and I. We love her photos!!

Elizabeth Burden Potter Photography is amazing! She photographed my husband proposing to me and has since taken me along to second shoot with her at weddings. She has been extremely helpful. She has taught me the ways of the wedding world, helped me with camera settings, and taught me many helpful tips and tricks along the way. So thankful for her!
