We had the good fortune of connecting with Emma Martin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emma, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
While I was working a full-time job, I struggled to maintain a healthy work-life balance. The experience taught me the importance of learning to say no. One of the reasons I started freelancing was to have more control over my schedule so I could prioritize more of a balance. It’s definitely challenging to break the cycle of working constantly when you’ve gotten into a routine of it. I’m sure the balance will change over time as opportunities come up, but right now I allow myself to take time off and step away from work for a little bit. I’ve noticed that I always return to my work with more creative ideas after I recharge.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
After graduating from Belmont University, I had the opportunity to work with some of the best songwriters in Nashville and industry professionals. I was starting to grow my network and put myself out there more which was new territory for me. Navigating your early 20s and your first full-time job is difficult but reflecting back, it helped me build the confidence and drive to start my own business. I now specialize in digital marketing and project management in the entertainment industry. I had always wanted to work in a business setting while also being creative so going this route was the perfect blend of the two. One of my favorite parts of my work is collaborating with other creatives. Different perspectives bring so much value to a project and each person’s unique talents create a strong sense of community.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There are so many great places around Nashville! For a good show, I’d take them to Anzie Blue in Hillsboro Village. It’s one of my favorite venues. I’ve been to a handful of shows there, and it’s also the only woman-owned music venue in Nashville. I’m always out looking for good food around town with friends. A few of my favorite restaurants I’ve been to are Graze, Woodlands Vegetarian Restaurant, and Blue Sushi Sake Grill. Whenever I’m in charge of picking a place to eat, it’s always one of those three places. I would also want to take them hiking. There are beautiful hiking trails in and around the city. Long Hunter State Park is not too far from town and overlooks Percy Priest Lake.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have so much to be thankful for, and it’s hard to recognize just a few things. I want to dedicate my shoutout to my support system: my parents, family, and friends. Their encouragement has helped me through the toughest parts of my personal and professional life. I feel inspired by them every day to keep creating and growing. I also want to give recognition to the mentors who have played a crucial role in my career. I continually gain knowledge from the people around me, and I am very grateful for their positive influence on my life.
