Meet Emily Cantrell | Founder Bloom Studios

We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Cantrell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Emily, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
It is the Japanese term “Ikigai” which roughly translates to “reason for being”. Sharing my ideas and creativity with children and young adults fills me with so much happiness. I realized about 3 years into my work that it became so successful because I had found my purpose in life,, and that purpose is to cultivate joy in the fine arts.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Bloom Studios was born out of a desire to share my education in fine arts and etiquette expertise with little ones. I wanted to encourage developing hearts and minds that they too could be that beautiful ballerina, fabulous artist, or sophisticated young lady/gentleman. Too often, I see children frustrated because they can’t participate in the parts of these disciplines that are the most fun because conventional belief dictates that they aren’t old enough to handle fine china and crystal, or acrylic paints, etc. my approach is to teach them how to handle these things respectfully, and seeing the pride in their faces when they accomplish their goals is worth everything to me!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
1. Dixon Gallery and Gardens Take a walk through the woodland garden and pack your picnic basket and watercolours. Don’t miss the Degas, Renoir, and Meissen on display in the permanent collection of the gallery. Park and Cherry restaurant offers delightful teas and sweets for young and old alike.
2. Walk around the shops at Laurelwood in East Memphis. The bookstore, Novel, has unique gifts and a cozy vibe. Their in house restaurant Libro is my go to spot for a business lunch or cappuccino with a friend.
3. Tour the lobby and ballrooms at the Peabody Hotel. You’ll feel like royalty walking the halls of this exquisite Arts and Crafts Era gem. If you’re feeling extra fancy, take your kids to high tea at Chez Phillipe for an experience they will never forget!
4. Date night restaurants:
Itta Bena- lovely low lit spot tucked away on Beale street. Amazing creole inspired dishes.
Andrew Michael-creative, sophisticated menu, always delicious
Porch and Parlour- old school white tablecloth charm in the heart of midtown. Their lobster bisque never disappoints
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
To my first students: my children Nico and Sasha
My grandmother Barbara who taught me freedom and magic in art and nature
My mother who taught me hard work and dedication and perseverance
