Meet Dr. Kimberly Atkins, EdD, LCSW | License Clinical Social Worker, and Mental Health Therapist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Kimberly Atkins, EdD, LCSW and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Kimberly, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
My name is Dr. Kimberly Atkins, EdD, LCSW. I was born and raised in Memphis, TN. I have lived in Memphis my entire life. Memphis is a very interesting place to live. We love music, sports, and food. We are direct and honest. We love making others laugh especially when it comes to “checking” or making fun of others in a playful manner. We are “go getters” and “trend setters”. We march by the beats of our own drums. A very large drum.
Growing up in Memphis, TN, I learned to develop very tough skin. I learned how to be independent and confident. I learned how to adapt to change. I am versatile. Especially since the weather in Memphis can change degrees rapidly and abruptly. I keep a jacket, umbrella, and an extra pair of shoes with me, always. I was very fortunate to attend 3 different schools in my childhood an optional school (Delano Optional School), a performing arts school (Colonial Jr. High), and a college preparatory school (Ridgeway High School).
As I was writing for the article, I realized that I also have 3 different degrees. I have a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from The University of Memphis, a master’s degree in social work from the University of Tennessee, and a Doctoral Degree in Counseling Psychology from Argosy University. Growing up in Memphis, I have developed a skill set that gives me the opportunity to take the various things I have learned along formulate my expertise and use it to help others improve their lives and accomplish their goals and dreams.
What should our readers know about your business?
I am a clinical social worker specializing in suicide prevention, Alzheimer’s Care, relationship counseling, and career management, as well as in coping skills in both adolescents and adults. I am the owner and CEO of Mind Renewals Counseling Services. I have more than 20 years of counseling experience.
I started my business 7 years ago. It was not easy. The number 1 challenge I faced was maintaining a profession mental health business during the pandemic. When the pandemic occurred in March 2020, I was concerned. I lost my office and had to work from home. I found a new office several months later. A schoolteacher showed me how to start accepting clients online. I noticed that online counseling could be beneficial. We were able to counsel family members who had different schedules, we could allow clients to receive counseling from their homes, and we were able to assist clients who had transportation issues. With the implementation of online counseling, we could assist more clients and deliver more mental health services to others.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to recognize The Saint Andrew AME Leadership Team. The Leadership Team completely embraced my children and me since 1998. They have loved us for over 25 years, in counting. During the Pandemic, they allowed me to start an online store. I have also been instrumental in designing conference shirts and promotional items. I currently conduct a Parent Workshop which meets quarterly to discuss stress, anxiety, and depression in teens and youth.
The Saint Andrew AME Leadership Team helped me prepare my children for college. They have supported them financially, emotionally, and prayerfully. I have also been awarded The Mom of The Year Award and The Volunteer of the Year for the Single’s Ministry. They have supported my television career and have watched my commentary and television shows on TV One and Fox 13 News.
I am so grateful to The Saint Andrew AME Leadership Team. And I dedicate this article to them. Thank you for loving us and accepting us. Thank you for allowing me to speak to others about the importance of Mental Health and The Word of God. You all have been so supportive of Mind Renewals Counseling Services. We will continue to pray for others. And we will continue to help others manage life and mental health.
