Meet Devin Hodge | Lead singer for Dayz of Deception

We had the good fortune of connecting with Devin Hodge and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Devin, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I chose this path because art never dies . Either musical arts or on canvas , it is here to stay regardless. Plus any arts , especially music, tells stories , shares feelings etc.
Being a musician opens so many doors . You get to meet new friends, see new places, just so much.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The band was started late summer of 2020. A very fitting name was chose , Dayz of Deception. The name comes from everything going on in todays world. Whats right is wrong, whats wrong is right . Just living in days that seem deceptive. Dayz of Deception was born !!We are so fortunate to not have tons of members come and go . Our members are :

Johnathan Wright- Guitar We have created our own sound . Some have started calling us Nu-grunge. Which is absolutely flattering to us really. We started out as a group just jamming 90’s covers , (just like every new starting grunge rock band) then got requested for shows after posting some videos. That was so humbling, even to date . We were one of the most played bands playing typically 2 to 4 shows a week. We started growing quickly just off of cover songs. We eventually grew tired somewhat of covering other bands music and started developing our own sound. We’ve been so fortunate to have Peter Klett of Candlebox mix and master some of our original songs as well as local recording support . During our musical journey, we found our path of using music to help our community. Every year we have successfully raised funds and toys for various shelters and organizations, with our biggest accomplishment helping over 7 thousand local families for 2022 Christmas season. We hold these families near and dear to us . Each of us in the band have been through and seen hard times so we know what its like struggling to make ends meet. We love our community and the people within it ! Our struggles as a band was not wanting to sound like every other band already playing the same genres or backing tracks to every song , etc all sounding the same . We wanted to be different. Each of us members come from multiple genres like punk , metal, grunge, and rock. When we combined our genres , we came up with our sound many love . Now don’t get me wrong, we do still enjoy playing some of our covers occasionally lol
We’ve learned so much as a band family. You seriously become family. You know what drinks each other drink, our schedules, what we eat , all the way down to what sets em off lol. We’ve learned taking our time on songs make them so much better than a quick wrote forced finish . This is why we currently have over 20 originals hanging out , yes we play them live and get tons of request for a copy etc . but if we release a new song every time we write it , we feel like it will over-saturate our music and the new song aspect would disappear. Plus , we want playing music to stay fun and not like a job . We do encourage new musicians to take your time , find your own sound , and never give up ! Become a family, 1 entity!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Chattanooga is absolutely full of surprises for out of towners , that us locals take it for granted. We have The Barrelhouse Ballroom for great shows that support local musicians the best ever. We have Songbirds , just OMG wow , if you love music , go there asap . Then we have everything on Lookout Mountain , Rock city. Ruby falls. The incline . So many places there.
Our little zoo is even amazing. One of our favorites , is the Aquarium!!
Now for down home good food , I won’t have enough room to put all the places . Chattanooga is super diverse in food and just about every place is phenomenal, especially our local small businesses like The Homeplate Bar and Grill .

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The real rockstars are our families who support our dreams and help push us further towards them , even when we get tired . Of course our community deserves a ton of love . Without their support we would be nothing as well. We’ve played to empty rooms all the way to sold out shows . Our followers are amazing. We do have some loyal people that started out just hearing us on tiktok or Facebook, maybe even a show, that have turned into absolute true friends and do not miss a show !! So our shout out goes to all of you that believe in us !
