Hi Denzel, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Becoming a graphic designer was never my initial plan. Originally, I envisioned myself as a funeral director with my own funeral home. However, my journey into graphic design began as a hobby, creating flyers for family events and close friends. It all changed when a company approached me for design services and became a repeat customer. That’s when I realized my true passion for graphic design.

With 16 years of experience in the industry, each year has brought new lessons. I constantly strive to stay ahead of the latest trends while upholding my unique style, which I find both challenging and rewarding. Yet, with unwavering determination, hard work, and faith, I have found that everything has become more manageable.

Reflecting on my journey, I can confidently say that it has been a thrilling ride. Despite facing moments of doubt and considering closing my business, I persevered. The industry may have become more crowded, but our dedication to true graphic design artistry has allowed us to prevail. While challenges with clients who’ve had negative experiences with graphic designers have arisen, we’ve adeptly navigated these situations, safeguarding our deals and partnerships.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Memphis, TN is the place to be for a great time, despite any negativity. It’s known for its fantastic BBQ, and my go-to spot for the best BBQ in Memphis is “Cozy Corner” located at 735 N Parkway, Memphis, TN. I’ve been enjoying their delicious BBQ since I was a child. If you visit, be sure to order from Chef J RaeChel and try the deep-fried tacos – they’re absolutely amazing.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to two incredible individuals who have significantly contributed to my journey.

First, Kristina McDaniel, my mentor, deserves immense recognition. Before reaching out for mentorship, I had followed her on social media for a long time. Our relationship has been transformative, marked by late-night discussions, crazy ideas, and a wide range of business conversations. Kristina’s guidance and wisdom have been invaluable.

Secondly, Jennifer Gillespie, my chef, and creative confidant. Her support goes beyond the kitchen; she’s my sounding board for numerous ideas. Everyone would be surprised by the range of things I consult her on. Whether I’m overthinking a logo or a flyer design, Jennifer is always there to provide insightful advice.

These two women have been pillars of support, and their contributions have played a crucial role in my success.
