Meet Daisy Sellas | Musician and songwriter

We had the good fortune of connecting with Daisy Sellas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Daisy, what matters most to you?
Empathy. This past year has taught me that there are two kinds of people in the world: those who consider the feelings of others and those who don’t. I only want to surround myself with people who have both the self awareness and the awareness that other peoples’ existence matters just as much as their own. I think the best songwriters/storytellers/creatives in general are empaths because we have the ability to put ourselves in the shoes of others and allow those stories to be told.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My story has changed dramatically since I last spoke with Voyager. I believe the last time, I spoke about falling in love and how much that changed my writing, in addition to becoming financially independent and spending time with the person I was going to marry. It’s almost comically sad looking back now because the person I was dating turned out to be the worst kind of abuser who left me so battered and bruised that I could barely walk. Since then, I have been in different stages of emotional and physical recovery and working tirelessly to make sure this never happens to another woman, at least at his hand. This has greatly impacted my writing and music. Sharing my story and including details that may be hard to hear for some people– like the fact that my abuser put a cigarette out on my face– is so important because it has not only helped me heal in a cathartic manner, but it could also help someone who is in that same situation get out of it. I want the world to know that I was a victim but I am also a survivor. This experience, while insanely difficult to deal with, has shown me how strong I truly am– I had to be, after he hit me so hard I saw stars and still managed to get back up to get him out the door.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh my gosh where do I begin?! Well, I’d take them to the World Famous Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge. first and foremost. I spend most of my days at the Purple Palace, and while my occupation as a musician there can be stressful and crazy sometimes, the people there are why I love it so much. I have made such incredible friends, have the best support system and truly have Tootsie’s to thank for making me feel safe at work after everything I went through. I’d also love to take a friend to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum because that’s my other workplace– I teach little kiddos how to write songs there. I love country music and they do the most excellent job at preserving the history. For food I’d have to say either El Torrito (the BEST Mexican food and margaritas) or Bella Napoli for the best Italian food and vibes. I’d also definitely take my friend to all the music stores I frequent around town– the Gibson Garage and Corner Music are two of my favorites!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am dedicating this shoutout feature to all of the domestic violence resource centers here in Nashville and the folks that have been helping me fight this legal battle, especially the Metro Nashville Family safety center. In addition, I want to shout out all of the women battling private wars and are survivors. You are not alone.
