Meet Cody Powers | Custom Furniture Builder

We had the good fortune of connecting with Cody Powers and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cody, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I was tired of always answering to someone else and my voice never being heard. Even though I was right hand man, I never felt valued. I was previously a high end cabinet builder, but I always wanted my own gig building custom furniture out of raw material. I knew I needed to set a good example for my kids as well and show them, taking the easy way out isn’t acceptable. There is more to life then just a paycheck.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What I love about my industry is it’s not what sets us apart from one another, it’s what brings us together. I could sit here and talk a big ego but truth is, most of us furniture builders feed off each other. Share ideas, products, and push each other to be better. There are so many different ways and things to learn in this industry, and how badly you an screw something up. So it’s great to have a tight community with fellow furniture builders supporting each other.
With that being said, competition is real though. One service that I offer that a lot of other furniture builders doesn’t is CAD renderings. Showing your furniture piece on a 3D CAD image directly in your home.
Of course this hasn’t been easy. I overcome challenges all the time. Mainly through failure and not giving up.
A couple lessons I’ve learned and am still learning is you can’t be doing this just to seek money. At first I was so broke and money hungry that’s all I could think about. Once I stepped back and asked how I could help the customer instead of my bank account, the money slowly starts to come in. And a weight is lifted off your shoulder. You learn to interreact with people better by properly serving them instead of just trying to sell them.
I’d like people to know there is opportunity out there, you just have to find and chase it hard. I have a passion for furniture building and the story behind the piece. Especially if it is a family tree that has fallen and would look better as a dining room table compared to firewood.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Personally I would probably just want to hunting or fishing but but there are a bunch of good restaurants in the area.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Hands down my wife Jessica. She has supported me on this crazy journey and believed in me when I quit my day job. She pushes me and picks me up when things start getting rough.
