We had the good fortune of connecting with Cody Murphy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cody, how do you think about risk?
I take a risk every day with my podcast, whether it’s reaching out to an agent/manager to set up an interview with an artist, or simply navigating social media, because covering the music industry can be brutal as far as social media goes. Thankfully, though, I have yet to experience any negative impact from the social media world, and hopefully that continues.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I host a podcast called Weekdays with Murph, and have been for almost 12 years now. For the past 10 years, I’ve focused on interviewing independent musicians about their lives, careers, etc.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There aren’t very many in my little town, but in my immediate area, I would first say you have to go to Shiloh Park if you’re a Civil War enthusiast. After that, like I said, there’s really not much.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people who, when I was a “baby broadcaster”, took me under their wing in this industry, but a couple come to mind right offhand. Ty Bentli, host of The Ty Bentli Show on Apple Music, has been a good friend and mentor for many years. There’s also Betsy Spina, former Radio Disney Country host. Betsy was probably the first person I reached out to for advice about navigating this industry, so those are just two people out of dozens who’ve helped me along the way.
