We had the good fortune of connecting with Clifford Koufman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Clifford, what’s the end goal, career-wise?
My goal is to create music, visual art, and videos and to share and teach what I’ve learned over years of study and practice. I would like to get to the point where there is enough interest in my work and what I offer that I don’t ever have to stress about finances.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I spent much of my career teaching and playing drums, drum set, and hand percussion. It has always had an aspect of being a grind. Not the act of creating or teaching interested people but the grind of having to always generate work and never being able to relax and enjoy accomplishments. It’s always on to the next thing. Moving to Nashville and my friendship with Ra Kalam Bob Moses helped me realize that I didn’t have to put myself in a box and that I could be happy creating in many ways, in many different mediums. Music is a part of who I am but I had neglected other aspects of creating that I used to do such as visual art. In recent years I began creating digital art and paining murals as well as working on film projects.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I had a friend in town, what would I plan? Hmmmm… I don’t go out much. I’d probably cook a meal. We might go out for Ethiopian food, Awash is my favorite in Nashville. The Station Inn for hometowny bluegrass. Urban Cowboy has a great vibe too.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
After years of working as a one-person show, doing everything myself, I am fortunate to have a team working on common goals such as the Bob Moses Drummer Film. Megan Richardson deserves credit for helping big projects come to fruition. She is smart, and great a problem solving. Also, her skill set complements mine or fills in gaps. David Martin also has complementary skills that augment Megan and my skills.
