Meet Cliff Dorsey | Recording artist and songwriter

We had the good fortune of connecting with Cliff Dorsey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cliff, how do you think about risk?
I view taking risks as an opportunity. It won’t always work out the way you expected it to but by taking the risk you are giving yourself the opportunity to learn, grow, and be in that moment. The role taking risks has played in my life is it’s allowed me to push beyond my comfort zone and brought new experiences like collaborations, projects, and partnerships.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As an artist, I have built my music on a foundation of songwriting and storytelling. The style of my music pulls from traditional country artists from over the last sixty years. I grew up in a two light town in North Central Florida called High Springs. At an early age I was listening to Johnny Cash, Keith Whitley, & George Strait. My first guitar came from the local music store on Main Street High Springs called Music Junction.
Within my first year of learning the guitar, Josh Turner came out with the song ‘Long Black Train.’ This song really resonated with me because all the men in my family drive freight trains & my mom always kept me in church. I went to church school for 8 years.
‘Long Black Train’ became the first song that I played in public for the congregation of the church I grew up in. At that time in my life I had terrible stage fright, I only sang it because my mom asked me to or rather she ‘made me’ perform it.
I now see my music as a way to pay respect to the artist that I grew up listening to both in the way you carry yourself with your fans and writing the songs that people can relate to.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The Nashville area is special. For sure I would take them to some of the songwriter’s nights. You get to see multiple artists share their songs and the stories behind them. Would definitely take them to some of the historic hallowed stages that are truly one of a kind spaces like the Ryman & the Exit In. Of course, we’d have to take a trip down memory lane and visit the Country Music Hall of Fame.
We’d find southern style restaurants like Arnold’s Kitchen. These always remind me of the restaurants back home in Florida.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, I want to give thanks to God for giving me a path to live out my dream and blessing my family. God has given me the faith to over come challenges and the guidance to make the right decisions along the way.
