We had the good fortune of connecting with CJ Oliver and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi CJ, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
I think the best decision I could’ve made was taking control of the narrative I wanted for my story. For years I was represented in a way that I had no say in, and it was a lot of personal building in order to become aligned with who I was and how I wanted to be presented in business, as well as personal life.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I (sort of) pingpong between music production and film scoring mainly, but I am an artist/songwriter as well, which puts me in a rather unique position of being able to understand what goes into the many sides of music as a whole, not in just one area. I’m grateful for the opportunities to be able to write, produce and engineer for mainstream records and create a unique world for projects in the film music space.

It was definitely not easy. In essence you’re almost building 3 different careers, with different skill sets and understandings, but all in all it has broadened my whole understanding and love for music across the board.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am a sucker for coffee pretty much at any locally owned coffee shop around the city. I live within walking distance of my favorite though, so I would say that one. 😉

I’m always up for experiences so The Frist is always on my list, the pop-up absinthe club “The Green Hour” in Germantown is always lovely. And pretty much any place with old books, candles, incense, herbs… I’ll be there.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I definitely want to shoutout my friend/social media manager, Cindy Collins, for believing in my skill and drive and setting me up with those who brought me to where I am now. I’d also like to shoutout the Recording Academy and the SCL for doing the work for those of us in this crazy industry.
