We had the good fortune of connecting with Christian McGee and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Christian, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
The balance ebbs and flows due to the different seasons of the business and what needs to be done to ensure its growth. There are seasons where I’m working hard to help other vendors, batch create social media content, etc., but that is all so that I can take more time off later. At the end of the day, I started a business to have a better work/life balance, and I’ve certainly achieved that!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My approach to documenting weddings is very experience-driven. I’ve worked with so many vendors over the last 5 years, and it’s pained me to see some of them distract the couple from the true meaning of the day, or selfishly direct and capture in order to have the “perfect” photos/videos for their own portfolio. If a couple really wants this experience, that’s great and they should hire someone to provide it! However, I think vendors can wrongly guide couples towards that and I’d rather my couples get to go spend time with family, hug friends, celebrate, and create stories with loved ones on their wedding day. I’ll stand close by, ready to document those moments (in an unobtrusive way) so that they can relive them many years from now.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m much more of a homebody or nature person, so I wouldn’t know the best spots in town haha. We would probably start with a couple of hours at Climb West, followed by lunch at Mas Tacos. If the indoor rock climbing didn’t tire us out, I’d say a post-lunch hike at Percy or Edwin Warner would be great, or a more leisurely walk around Centennial Park. If rock climbing was enough, shopping in 12 South or Green Hills would be next on the list. Ending the day with Blue Sushi Saki and some Top Golf would probably round it out nicely!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Fulltime Filmmaker was the launch pad for my success. It taught me more than college ever did (I actually dropped out because I found myself skipping class for gigs I booked), and it was less than $1,000. After that, I attribute the additional growth to workshops, mentors, and business coaches I hired over the years. Examples would be Venture Workshop, Craft 5k Films, Profitable Filmmaker, and Brad & Jen coaching!
