We had the good fortune of connecting with Chloe Duvall and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chloe, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind the success of my music is that I always stay true to myself. I never want to be the artist who only makes music to stay relevant or go viral or get attention. If I’m making music, it’s because I love it and I can’t imagine myself doing anything else. I value authenticity above everything else.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I grew up in a small town called Portland, TN. There really isn’t anything there other than farmland and cattle so I knew I had to get out from a very young age. My cousin Sherri invited me to play a song with her at The Listening Room Cafe when I was 11 years old. I said yes and sang the first song I ever wrote on my acoustic guitar. I thought I’d be nervous up there but I loved being in the spotlight. That’s when I knew music was for me. I started writing songs and playing shows that my mom would drive me to. I was obsessed with Taylor Swift and so I wanted to be just like her and I would play her covers at my shows.

It was a little weird. I was the awkward homeschooler who didn’t have any friends but at the same time was kind of cool because I could sing and write songs. Everyone was watching me and yet no one talked to me. Music was therapeutic to me around this time and it helped me overcome a lot. Now I’m grateful to have a community, but my relationship with music has stayed the same.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is such a good question! Well, I’d have to take them to the coffeehouse in Germantown called Neighborlily. That place is so cute because they put edible flower petals in your drinks. I love a cute aesthetic coffee shop. We would also have to visit the Nashville Flea Market if it was happening that week because I have a thrifting obsession. We might also get brunch and mimosas at Liberty Common downtown and walk on the John Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge so that my friend could see the place where I used to busk during the summer. And then of course we’d have to have a sunset picnic at Love Circle in Sylvan Park. There is so much to do in Nashville and it never gets old.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to give a big shoutout to the book The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron. Honestly, that book changed my life. I think every creative should read it, especially if you’re a musician. It gives you such a good perspective on the world and how we as creatives self-sabotage in order to keep ourselves from actually pursuing our dreams. I’ve read it like three times now. So good.
