Meet Cayleigh Ely | Photographer, Educator, Podcast Host

We had the good fortune of connecting with Cayleigh Ely and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cayleigh, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
I sometimes wonder if clients truly understand how much we love the and what we do for them. It’s not just a paycheck. It’s such an incredible honor that we are trusted to document some of the happiest and biggest moments of their lives. I see all my clients as friends, which makes the process much more collaborative and meaningful (hopefully for them too!) but it also means if they choose another photographer or don’t like their photos that it’s upsetting because I want them to love their photos. I get so excited to see my clients before their session or wedding and I get really sad once it’s over because I never know if I’ll see them again.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
It’s never easy, but it’s worth it! My favorite quote is “you get what you work for, not what you wish for.” and I’ve gone by that line my whole career and it definitely pays off! You can’t just sit around waiting for things to happen in your business. You’ve gotta go after it yourself! And don’t let things get you down if they don’t work out the first time, take a breath, try a different approach, and try again! I definitely think I lead my business from the heart and I photograph all walks of life (I don’t niche down) which sets me a part from others because I can be a photographer for life, rather than a season.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If it’s nice weather I’d take us to brunch outside, then a local bookstore to peruse and maybe read for a bit with coffee. Then we’d go kayaking down the Cumberland River right by the Nashville skyline! Then go to 5th and Broad for some dinner + drinks!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Honestly all of my amazing clients have helped me build the business I have today. In the early days there was lots of shoutouts on social media and tags, and now there’s so much word of mouth referrals or repeat clients that come back time and time again! I would also have to shout out my favorite book, Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert because that is such an inspiring, comfort read for creatives.
