Meet Camilla Curran | Writer, Content Creator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Camilla Curran and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Camilla, what matters most to you?
Hard work. Simply put there may always be someone more qualified or intelligent in the room, but if your work ethic is unmatched, so too will be your results. It works every time.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I feel as if I’ve lived 3 careers, all before the age of 30. With the titles of professional ballet dancer, model, and poet all on my resume, at 34, I’m currently delving into my next phase of professional development: historical novelist. I began my professional career as a dancer with Tennessee Ballet Theater in Memphis and spent over 8 seasons performing with them while simultaneously modeling professionally through a prestigious southern talent agency, AMAX.
The numerous challenges I’ve faced include, overcoming a mental health disorder, Bipolar 1, as well as the physical limitation of brachial plexus palsy of the left arm and shoulder. Despite these challenges, mentally and physically, I’m proud to have achieved the caliber of performing I did during my time at TBT.
Additionally, not only did I overcome my mental and physical limitations to achieve this success, I found inspiration in my struggles. Enough inspiration to create a volume of poetry in 2014, titled SWINGS.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m a Memphian through and through. I love too many things to list about my hometown, from our incredible arts scene to our diverse social network, there is truly a niche for everyone. First 0n my list of things to do would be a little milling about the incredible Brooks Museum on a rainy day. For a smaller city like Memphis to have museums of the caliber of the Brooks, Dixon and MoSH is truly remarkable and a testament to the artistic pulse of our community. I’d make sure to follow up our museum perusal with coffee and lunch at Otherlands, a midtown coffee shop and staple since ‘forever’ and once my favorite hang out during my school days at the former Memphis College of Art. If weather permits, I’d be sure to take my bestie on a long meandering walk along our gorgeous river front, there’s no other view like it! I’d also like to add, I’m fortunate enough to live in a beautiful historic building downtown that boasts the best rooftop views in Memphis. We’d definitely begin a night out there, with panoramic views of the Memphis Bridge and riverfront followed by drinks at my favorite local watering hole, Bar Ware. Their mixologists are top notch.
At some point dinner at Catherine and Mary’s would become an absolute necessity as would brunch at famous Owen Brennan’s.
Additionally, I’m a huge fan of salsa dancing so a weekend trip to Rumba Room Memphis is a MUST. Not only is it a fabulous dance club but the food, drinks and colorful atmosphere are unmatched.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mom, Nora, is the reason I am the creative and writer I am today. Long before I published my first volume of poetry or dreamed of writing historical novels, she made my papers for school drip red ink. With myriad in depth corrections, she, a former Chicago journalist, ensured that editing became second nature to me. I’ll never be able to repay her for insight into the art of writing.
