Meet Caleb Suggs | Writer, Filmmaker, & Voice Talent

We had the good fortune of connecting with Caleb Suggs and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Caleb, what inspires you?
I’m inspired by a lot of cartoons actually, and really anything that hits me with a “larger than life” quality. When I was a kid, watching TV was my favorite activity. I used to imagine what it would be like to run my own TV network: what shows I’d play, what commercials and bumpers would look like, and what cartoons I’d have on. Living in Memphis, I didn’t really know that that kind of thing was actually a career back then. But nowadays that’s what I pursue. I really love cartoons because of how much stylization and expression they have, and how much vibrance and work goes into them. I love movie musicals and superhero shows too. Something about them just gets me fired up!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
It’s kind of funny because I never really think of myself as an artist (my art friends would kill me if they heard me say that lol). That being said, there’s no denying that what I do in film and media takes a lot of unique creative talent and execution, and I’m proud of that. It wasn’t easy getting to where I am today—co-founder of a film company and overall media specialist—but I’d say I got here by not shying away from the uphill battles and bringing kindness and integrity with me each step of the way. I always make what I make with a standard of excellence in mind and a certain quality at the forefront. Not that I haven’t had days where things didn’t go my way or where I just wanted to give up, but you can avoid a lot of challenges by having standards and by being real and nice to people. I think those are undertones I want bleeding in all my work: quality, kindness, and hopefully inspiration.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Ooooh, tough one for me. I like to cater excursions to the person. But I’m always down for a trip to the Memphis Zoo! The new AMUSE Adventure Museum is pretty dope too! If we want dessert, Cupcake Cutie downtown is definitely the move. Food’s a hard one cuz I have the most random cravings, but I’m usually down with Mexican or pizza from somewhere. There’s just so many places to eat in Memphis! I find out about a new spot like every week.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First, give an honor to God. None of this would be possible without Jesus giving me my inspiration, my passion, and the right people in my life. And I gotta shout out my alma maters, Germantown High School and The University of Memphis. Germantown got me started in the biz with it’s amazing theatre and TV programs, the Poplar Pike Playhouse and GHS-TV. The UofM’s journalism and film programs helped me develop into the professional I am today and gave me a lot of the connections I lean on.
