Meet Brittany Jean | Singer/Songwriter

We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittany Jean and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittany, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Oh, there are so many reasons why, but really it all comes down to… I love it. I love making music.
As a songwriter, processing and reflecting the world around me in writing, choosing what to highlight and what to paint more subtly, telling stories, discovering melodies and the chord progressions, working with fellow musicians in the studio creating something new that didn’t exist before now, really focusing on bringing beauty and hope to whoever might hear the work… There’s something lovely about working and living in that space.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I want to be a storyteller. So the story-songs are my favorite. Ballads and folk songs. When I write a new song myself, sometimes the stories are my own, sometimes they are stories I’ve observed or had a front-row seat for, and sometimes they belong to someone else entirely–someone who may not see just how beautiful they are…
Sometimes I feel like a wandering minstrel, gathering up and saving the stories that touch my heart, hoping they won’t be lost.
I’m thankful for where music has taken me in my own story–literally across the country and back several times, and I look forward to where the road will take me next, the new songs yet to be written, the fellow wanderers to meet, and the adventures to be had along the way…
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love Nashville! But I really haven’t spent much time downtown…
Because Nashville to me means… spending several days, morning to night, in the studio recording new music! Whenever I’m in the city, that is the whole reason for being there, and it’s a dream come true every time I step into Hilltop Recording Studios to work with the finest studio musicians the world has ever seen and the finest engineer, recording brand new, never-heard-before songs. It is… Recording days are my favorite days.
So if my best friend came to Nashville with me, it would definitely include some studio days.
But when the work was all done, I would definitely get us tickets to see whoever was playing at The Ryman or the Grand Ole Opry… On second thought, we would have to go to both. And we would probably try different places for lunch and dinner, but Jeni’s Ice Cream would have to be involved at some point…
There are so many places I haven’t been to yet, myself, but… with so many great options, it’s difficult to go wrong.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mom and dad.
They have been my constant encouragement and support from Day 1. Actually before that. I think they saw all of this before I did–what I might pursue. From the moment I touched a piano, they encouraged me to play. From the moment I sang my first note, they encouraged me to sing. When I took interest in writing, they encouraged me to take the songwriting and theory classes offered at my high school and beyond. When they heard a story about why Gordon Lightfoot first picked up a guitar, they gave me my first one (its name is Oliver). They have ever been my first listeners–be it my sharing the tiniest first idea for a song or the fifth rough draft. They have been with me every step of the way–right there in the studio on studio days, and they get the first CDs out of the box on album release days.
They are and have always been my team, and I am so grateful for them.
