Hi Brianna, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
I envision my legacy as the first black female sports reporter from The Ohio State University who launched her own sports TV talk show. On “Off The Fields,” my goal is to establish a platform that embraces inclusivity across various sports, notably football, basketball, track and field, soccer, hockey, tennis, NASCAR, women’s sports, high school, and little league sports. This platform provides a safe space for athletes to openly discuss societal issues like inequality, sexuality, and racism within the sports world. Moreover, “Off The Fields” celebrates topics that may not receive ample attention on mainstream sports networks, ensuring a diverse and comprehensive exploration of the sports landscape. I hope this approach inspires future generations to use their voices and effect positive change in the world.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I take immense pride in being the inaugural black female sports reporter at The Ohio State University. Recognizing the significance of representation in a predominantly white institution, I aimed to inspire other young black women, demonstrating that they too could access the resources needed to succeed.

My professional journey was shaped by networking and leaving a lasting impression in the sports industry and news circles. These relationships proved instrumental in securing some of my initial jobs, both in news and off the field.

The path was far from easy, especially in the male-dominated sports realm where doubt was prevalent. Initially facing challenges of being the only woman in rooms filled with bald and grey-headed individuals, I earned respect over time, drawing on the wisdom of my grandfathers who shared the same name. Their insights into their respective sports and states played a crucial role in developing my mental toughness.

Throughout this journey, I’ve learned the importance of pursuing one’s passion, trusting one’s instincts, avoiding self-doubt, and maintaining unwavering belief. Faith has been a constant anchor.

What sets Off The Fields apart is its mission to transform athletes’ lives by shaping positive narratives in the media, highlighting off-field accomplishments, and fostering a safe space for athletes to delve into sensitive topics like social issues, sexuality, inequality, and racism. The ultimate goal is to shatter barriers and stigmas surrounding mental illness.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my closest friend were visiting my hometown of Fort Lauderdale, FL, I’d ensure they experience the best week ever. We’d hit the beach daily, making stops at local favorites like Quarterdeck, Casablanca for its fantastic menu and oceanside ambiance, and a nostalgic visit to Primanti Brothers, my favorite pizza spot from high school. Chimas, Hot Leggz, and Finger Licking are must-visit staples. For a taste of downtown nightlife, Las Olas offers a lavish experience with spots like YOLO, Moxies, American Social, and occasionally the Elbo Room.

Exploring beyond, the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino and its surroundings are definite highlights. And with Miami just 30 minutes away, the list of exciting places expands exponentially. There’s no shortage of fun, interesting, and vibrant spots to check out in this vibrant area.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
A heartfelt shoutout to The Ohio State University, a place that provided me with unparalleled resources and access to the most prestigious sports networks, esteemed journalists, coaches, and athletes of all time. As a student, being surrounded by the best of the best allowed me to rub shoulders with those I aspire to emulate in a unique way. Grateful for the opportunity to be a Buckeye, where excellence in sports meets unparalleled inspiration.
