Meet Bella Garland | Singer/Songwriter

We had the good fortune of connecting with Bella Garland and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bella, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
Music. Period. I can’t imagine my life without music. Even when I am going through something very difficult, music has a way of turning that pain into something that makes me proud. The best art is created from places of sorrow. Also, the way I have seen music change people’s lives is unlike anything else. The way it has made people realize things and feel less alone. It really is the universal language. It’s magic.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My music is my diary. I overshare in my songs absolutely, but that’s what I think makes my listeners relate! I know that in my music, there are no rules. I can say whatever I feel, and I definitely do. I blend the storytelling features of country music with the vocal agility of R&B, and I never shy from clever lyrics or metaphors. I have worked hard to get where I am today. I have done all my social media and branding by myself, written my own songs, networked, and have continued to push forward because I believe I was put on this earth to share my music. However, I would not be where I am today without the support of my family, friends, music teachers, and of course, my mentor Del Couch. Without their encouragement and teachings, I would be lost! It is not easy trying to make it in an industry that constantly is changing. I have learned that comparing myself to others gets me nowhere. We are all on our own timelines and journeys. The sky is big enough for thousands of stars. There is room for every single one to shine.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely take them to my favorite food spots first! Doughbird pizzeria, Waldo’s Chicken and Beer, and Greenhouse Bar are definitely my top 3. The coffee shops in Nashville are also amazing, such as Ugly Mug and Frothy Monkey! If you are going to visit Nashville, you can’t not go to the Country Music Hall of Fame! What better place to learn about the biggest stars of country music than in it’s hometown! The Bluebird Cafe is also a spot that can’t be missed. I have been fortunate enough to play the Bluebird 6 times, and every single time is more magical than the previous. The energy in that room is electric. The songwriters are out of this world. Finally, two of my favorite hangout spots are Midtown and Pins Mechanical! These spots are perfect for hanging out with friends, playing fun games, as well as checking out live music!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mentor since I was 16 years old, Del Couch. He has believed in me since the day he heard me sing my original song “To Be Happy”. He has taught me how to be confident in myself, protect myself in the music industry, as well as connect me with many opportunities and people who have helped me reach milestones on my music journey. He is always going to be the biggest part of my story.
