Meet Anthony Romano | Creative Portrait and Branding Photogrpaher

We had the good fortune of connecting with Anthony Romano and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Anthony, how do you define success?
For me … I define success as consistency. Consistency is the amount of work I receive, the creativity I bring to each project, and peace of mind. I used to think success was monetary or a status symbol. Over the years I’ve refined that believe and have felt that I’ll be successful when I’m consistent. If I’m pursuing things for the right reasons those original ideas of success will come naturally, but if I’m not actively pursuing consistency in my work, life, etc. … then I’ll have a hard time reaching what I feel is ‘success.’
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think what gets me excited about my work is that it is ever changing and ever evolving. No two clients are every alike .. and even different projects for the same client can often result in totally different results. I like to think of my work as creative, quality, relatable, and personal.
My original focus was graphic design and with that trajectory I spent over 15 years working in marketing. While I had the opportunity to be creative in some positions, I never felt like I was living up to my potential, or providing the service that I felt my (then potential) clients deserved.
It was not an easy journey! Not financially, not mentally, heck not even creatively. Trying to find your niche, your client base, and something that sets your soul on fire, isn’t going to just fall into your lap. I’m still working on fine tuning my process, my ideal client, etc.
I’d love for the world to think of my brand as quality high-end portraits that bring out the best in the subject. Sounds mildly trite and not super descriptive, but like I said … all of my clients and projects are different … and that’s the beauty of owning my own business. I get to work with those that I feel are the best fit and that I can provide and amazing product to.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well damn! That’s a loaded question haha. Nashville has become the go-to spot for bachelorette parties and honky-tonkin. Two of my not so favorite pastimes haha. There’s so much more to the area than just Broadway!
Depending on who was visiting haha food would definitely be one of the starts of the show! A few of my favorite places for food and coffee around town are:
– Sam & Zoe’s
– Babo Korean Bar
– Sip
– Smokin’ Thighs
– Plaza Mariachi (such a fun environment, especially on a Friday or Saturday night)
There are soooo many good options all around Nashville but East Nashville is the best non-toursity area to check out!
I also dig the hiking trails and parks that we have around town. Percy Warner and Edwin Warner are some of my favorites!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Oh man! There is a pretty large list of people I’m thankful for. One reason or another (good or bad) they’ve all led me to this point in my career. My parents, and my brother, have been huge proponents of me pursuing a creative career and working for myself. It’s been important to me to have their understanding, support, feedback, and insight. My friends are also a huge support system for me. I’ve been fortunate to have my mentor, Tausha Dickinson, who is a bad ass photographer, and has given me so much advice throughout my journey as a business owner. Sometimes just having a sounding board who has “been there, done that” can be one of the greatest resources when navigating running a creative business full-time.
