Meet Anna Cohen | Event planner, decorator, and caterer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Anna Cohen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Anna, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I have had an entrepreneur mindset since I was a teenager. I have sold everything from Rainbow vacuums to life insurance. I have tried so many multi level marketing companies that it was unimaginable. I was sooo tired of all of them. I wanted to do something that I could be in control of. With the other businesses, if the people under me didn’t work, I didn’t receive any pay. I knew that I would work. I didn’t want my success to be based off of another person not doing anything. I have always enjoyed planning events, decorating, and seeing it all come together. So when I was able to, I invested in the product and it has been a success and blessing thus far.
What should our readers know about your business?
My business name is Your Special Day Wedding Services. My motto is making your day special and most of all stress free. What makes my business unique is that I am a one stop shop. I work with multiple vendors to make the clients parties, anniversaries, weddings, birthdays, any kind of special day stress free. All they have to do is give me their requests, and we make it happen for them. I myself, provide 75% of the services to the clients. So I am definitely proud of our legacy and reputation we have built over the years. The business has had it’s challenges. I have learned a lot of lessons, taken a lot of losses, and learned strategies and techniques the hard way. I didn’t have any one to mentor me or guide me. So when other decorators ask me, I happily oblige and give them advice so they don’t make the same mistakes I did as a young business owner. God has been on my side since day one and I give him honor and recognition before every event. He helps me overcome every challenge with wisdom to figure it out or peace with the negative outcomes I have experienced.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take my best friend to an affordable play on Playhouse on the square. We would then take a stroll on Beale street in the daytime to admire some of Memphis history. Dining at BBKing’s restaurant would be a highlight as well. Memphis has a lot to do. Mud Island is historic and interesting to visit jus like the Civil Rights’ Museum and Slave Haven. We could take a riverboat cruise and stroll along Tom Lee Park. Some of the best places to eat at in Memphis is Kooky Conuck, Soul Fish Cafe, J. Alexander, and many more. We have a lot of unique tastes to explore in the city.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First of all, I thank my Lord and Savior for everything! Life, health and strength to do the events, a mind to create and develop the work, and the favor he puts on my client’s hearts to hire me. I have to thank my friend, Joyce Smith. She gave me my first decorating experience. She hired me to decorate for a sorority event, and it opened up so many doors for me. She had faith in me and entrusted me to do the job. My mother is my sole support as well. She is no longer here, but she left me an inheritance, and I wanted to make sure her inheritance was not wasted. So I invested it into my own business that is still striving 10 years later. She is the start of my success!
