We had the good fortune of connecting with Akeara Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Akeara, what principle do you value most?
I stand by being authentically me. Accepting that even with years of experience, I still have so much more to learn. I still have so much room to grow. The greatest principle as an artist, for me, would be knowing that being able to share my work is the reward.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started out as a broke college student looking for a way to earn extra money. I was able to get my hands on a copy of Adobe Photoshop. I would sit for hours learning what the symbols and tools meant. From there, I would create myspace layouts and graphics. I took the money I’d saved from designing and purchased my first DSLR. It was there that I found my love for photography. I noticed there wasn’t much representation for women who looked liked me, a black woman of a darker complexion. I set out to change that. But being a fan of Lisa Frank, I wanted to incorporate vibrant colors. I want people to know that even if the market is filled with a talent similar to yours, It doesn’t have a YOU. There is always room for your creativity.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In Memphis, I would take them to Overton Square. It’s very hipster but the aesthetic is nice. Midtown has so many amazing murals from artist all around the city. There are many small restaurants in that area to explore and try.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to thank my assistant Bella Golightly. She has been with me through some amazing photo sessions. She’s very hands on here in Memphis with other projects as well. I would like to dedicate my shout out to my mother. She will often say she doesn’t have a creative bone in her body lol. She allowed me to experiment and find my passion. Thank you for that, mom!
