We had the good fortune of connecting with Alex McVey and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alex, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The business originally grew out of my own need for high-quality, customized acoustic treatment for my studio. After coming off the road as a touring musician, I converted a room in our home into a studio to begin recording as a session drummer. I built my own acoustic panels and quickly discovered a passion for working with my hands. After sharing photos of my studio, I started receiving inquiries from other musicians and producers interested in custom acoustic treatment for their own spaces. From there, the business gradually grew into what it is today.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I specialize in building fully customized acoustic solutions, including panels, clouds, gobos, and precise installation. What sets me apart is my ability to meet, not only my clients acoustic needs, but their aesthetic needs as well.

There were certainly challenges along the way, especially since I’m more naturally focused on creativity than business. As McVey Acoustics has grown, I’ve had to push myself to develop a more business-minded approach and seek advice from those with more expertise.

I want the world to know that every one of my projects is a reflection of my commitment to providing personalized, high-quality acoustic solutions for those who value the best in both sound and design. I’m most proud of the relationships I’ve built with my clients. I’ve made a lot of friends along the way and am thankful for every room I’ve been able to treat.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If a friend visited Nashville, I’d take them to my favorite spots for a well-rounded experience.

We’d start with breakfast at Big Al’s Deli, a Germantown gem known for its incredible Southern-style food at great prices.

For coffee, we’d stop by Crema, one of the first local spots I discovered after moving here. They serve some of the best coffee I’ve ever had period.

For drinks, I’d book The Patterson House—a relaxed, upscale bar with expertly crafted cocktails.

To explore, we’d visit the Musicians Hall of Fame, which highlights the unsung players behind legendary records. I’d also recommend catching a show at 3rd & Lindsley, the Basement, or the Ryman—some of my favorite venues in town!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d love to give a shoutout to my dad. He bought me my first saw to start this business and has been a huge supporter of all that I do. I’d also like to thank my wife for being my partner in this journey and helping get this business where it is today.
