Meet Ryan Bernowski | Lapidary Artist & Mineral Collector

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ryan Bernowski and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ryan, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
I always heard that I needed to think through every decision, large and small, to make sure it was the best decision. I’ve found instead that taking early, decisive action builds momentum and teaches you things analysis simply can’t. So, my motto has become: Refine as you go. The polish comes later—quite literally in my case!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My products in essence are pieces of art that the Earth created naturally. Usually many millions of years before I receive them, so showcasing that artwork in the best possible light is incredibly important for me.
When I first started, I had to teach myself many of the techniques through trial and error.
I remember burning through countless pieces of agate and feeling like I’d never perfect the polish they deserved.
The most exciting part personally is while cutting into an agate is like uncovering a secret that nature has been safeguarding for millions of years. Each swirl of color, every crystalline pattern—it’s a one-of-a-kind masterpiece waiting to be revealed. In that moment, I’m like an explorer discovering a treasure no one else has ever laid eyes on.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Nashville is an incredible destination with so much to offer. One of my favorite activities would be to explore the creeks and streams nearby. There’s something truly special about hunting for Tennessee paint rock and discovering the abundance of geodes scattered throughout the area—it’s a perfect way to enjoy the natural beauty of this region!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Yes, hands down. Priscilla, my wife has been and continues to be the cornerstone of my work. Thank you, darlin’, I love you!
