We had the good fortune of connecting with Ally Beard and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ally, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
What is the Most Important Factor Behind My Success?
Success is often attributed to hard work, determination, and the ability to navigate obstacles. Reflecting on my journey over the past few years, I have come to understand that gratitude is a fundamental aspect of how I perceive my experiences and the lessons learned along the way.
Graduating from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, in 2021 marked a significant milestone in my life, yet the journey was fraught with challenges. Transitioning from a student to a professional can be daunting, especially during a period when the world was still reeling from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
One significant challenge I encountered was the uncertainty in the job market, particularly in the education sector, which was undergoing considerable transformation. As I endeavored to establish myself in education, I faced limited opportunities and a pervasive sense of instability. The lack of in-person teaching experiences and networking events further complicated my attempts to connect with potential employers and colleagues.
In addition to my commitment to special education, I embarked on the journey of launching my own photography business. This venture required not only creative skills but also a solid understanding of business operations. Navigating the complexities of marketing my services in a saturated market was a considerable challenge, as establishing a unique brand and attracting clients demanded significant effort, especially with limited resources.
Time management emerged as another critical challenge. Balancing the dual pursuits of launching a photography business while seeking a position in education required meticulous organization and prioritization. Juggling multiple roles often led to moments of stress and self-doubt. Nonetheless, these challenges imparted valuable lessons in resilience and adaptability.
I have also been coaching cheer and gymnastics at Premier Athletics since I was 15 years old, which has been a significant part of my life. Currently, I coach WILCO’s 14U cheer team in the afternoons. Coaching has not only allowed me to share my passion for athletics but has also reinforced my commitment to mentorship and community engagement. Building connections within the cheerleading community has taught me the importance of teamwork, discipline, and leadership—values that resonate in both my professional and personal life.
Networking proved to be another hurdle. Building connections in both special education and photography was essential for growth and opportunities, compelling me to step outside my comfort zone. It was during this journey that I discovered my passion for students with disabilities.
The path from graduation to establishing my photography business and pursuing a career in special education has been both challenging and rewarding. Each obstacle has contributed to my personal and professional development, underscoring the importance of perseverance, creativity, and continuous learning. While balancing family, friends, and a hidden passion for obtaining my piloting license, a pivotal moment occurred in 2022 when I submitted an essay that ultimately led to a full scholarship for my Master’s degree in Education, including a dual Master’s in Special Education from Lipscomb University. This essay not only transformed my educational trajectory but also ignited my passion for advocating for the special needs community, guiding me toward a purpose-driven career.
My own educational journey has not been without struggles. Battling a learning disability since the age of 12 often felt like a label that diminished my capabilities. Negative self-talk was a constant challenge, and I frequently felt discouraged by grades that did not reflect my effort. However, these experiences taught me a vital lesson: learning disabilities do not define a student’s potential.
Now, I aspire to serve as a role model for children, demonstrating that they can achieve greatness despite challenges. Disabilities can be a source of strength rather than a hindrance to success. The rewards of hard work may not be immediately visible, but they often manifest in profound ways later in life.
By spring 2024, I made the decision to temporarily step back from the special education field. While my contributions were meaningful, I yearned to make a broader impact on how individuals with disabilities are treated and educated.
This summer, I had the privilege of working with the State of Tennessee’s Disability and Aging Department, where I collaborated with exceptional professionals to identify ways to utilize my strengths for the benefit of Tennessee’s residents. Recently, I was offered an exciting opportunity to serve as an Executive Assistant to the Director and Deputy Director of Tennessee Strong Families and Homes within the Department of Disability and Aging. I am eager to engage with my community and contribute to advancements for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
TN Strong Families and Homes is dedicated to enhancing the welfare of families and children throughout Tennessee. The initiative provides essential resources, support, and services to ensure children grow up in safe, nurturing environments. By emphasizing prevention, the program aims to reduce incidents of child abuse and neglect while empowering families with the knowledge and tools they need to thrive.
Balancing multiple roles while pursuing my education has been challenging. Exhaustion and missed social opportunities have been part of the journey, yet I harbor no regrets. These experiences have imparted invaluable lessons about resilience and self-efficacy. I have learned that I can overcome formidable challenges and achieve my goals.
In December, I graduated with a 4.0 GPA and earned my Master’s in Elementary Education and Special Education. Each day, I express gratitude for the life I lead and the challenges that have shaped me. I am supported by those around me and driven by my determination. These experiences will remain with me, serving as a constant reminder that hard work and determination truly yield success.

My Career Journey: Passion, Perseverance, and Purpose
My career has been a dynamic blend of education, mentorship, and entrepreneurship, driven by a passion for making a meaningful impact in the lives of others. What sets me apart from others in my field is my unique combination of experiences in special education, coaching, and business. I have been fortunate to embrace opportunities that allow me to advocate for individuals with disabilities while fostering creativity and resilience through my photography business and coaching roles.
Currently, I serve as the Administrative Assistant for TN Strong Families and Homes, a role that allows me to directly contribute to the disability community. In this position, I collaborate with dedicated professionals to enhance the welfare of families and children throughout Tennessee. My work involves providing essential resources, support, and services to ensure children grow up in safe, nurturing environments. I am proud to be part of an initiative that emphasizes prevention, reduces incidents of child abuse and neglect, and empowers families with the knowledge and tools they need to thrive.
One of the aspects I am most proud of is my commitment to serving the special needs community. It is this dedication that has shaped my professional identity and fuels my desire to be an advocate for students with disabilities. I believe that every child deserves the chance to thrive, regardless of the challenges they face, and I strive to embody this belief in my work.
My journey to where I am today has not been easy. Graduating from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, in 2021 marked the beginning of my professional endeavors, but the transition from student to professional was complicated by the uncertainties of the job market during the COVID-19 pandemic. Navigating these challenges required resilience and adaptability, as I sought to establish myself in education while launching my photography business. The limited opportunities and lack of in-person networking made it difficult to connect with potential employers and colleagues.
To overcome these challenges, I focused on developing my skills and maximizing opportunities as they arose. I embraced the learning process, sought mentorship, and stepped outside my comfort zone to network within my community. Coaching cheer and gymnastics at Premier Athletics since I was 15 years old has also played a pivotal role in my development. It taught me the value of teamwork, leadership, and the importance of fostering a positive environment for growth.
Through my experiences, I have learned several valuable lessons. First, perseverance is key. Challenges are an inevitable part of any journey, but how we respond to them defines our success. Second, I learned the importance of building a strong support network. The encouragement and support from my family, friends, and mentors have been invaluable in helping me navigate obstacles. Lastly, I discovered that embracing vulnerability can lead to growth. Sharing my experiences, including my struggles with a learning disability, has allowed me to connect with others and inspire them in their journeys.
I want the world to know that my brand is rooted in empowerment, advocacy, and creativity. My story is one of resilience and determination, and I am committed to making a difference in the lives of individuals with disabilities. I aim to inspire others to recognize their potential and pursue their passions, regardless of the challenges they may face. Through my work at TN Strong Families and Homes, along with my efforts in education, coaching, and photography, I aspire to create positive change and contribute to a more inclusive society.
Ultimately, my career is not just about professional achievements; it is about the impact I can make in the lives of others. I look forward to continuing this journey and embracing new opportunities that allow me to serve my community and advocate for those who need it most.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would definitely say enjoy a weekend in Knoxville, Tennessee; I would recommend starting with a visit to Cool Beans, a local favorite known for its iconic, nostalgic experience, where you can enjoy live music, food, and drinks. This vibrant atmosphere sets the perfect tone before heading to Neyland Stadium to cheer on the Tennessee Vols in one of the best SEC stadiums. After the excitement of the game, I would suggest driving an hour east to Dollywood. There, you can ride the thrilling Wild Eagle roller coaster and indulge in some of the best cinnamon bread served with apple butter or homemade icing—an absolute must-try. As you wrap up your trip, consider stopping back in Knoxville for a relaxing riverboat dinner ride, or enjoy a hearty meal at Calhoun’s on the River, known for its delicious BBQ and beautiful views of the Tennessee River. This itinerary combines the thrill of college football, the fun of Dollywood, and delightful dining experiences, making for an unforgettable weekend in Knoxville!
