Meet Kelly & Alex

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelly & Alex and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kelly & Alex, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Everything about our business has been a risk. Quitting our previous jobs to be full-time for a new business was extremely risky. We had to trust that this was where we should be and what we should be doing. Putting ourselves out there to network for business is a huge risk, but we’ve met some of the most wonderful people in the process and have gathered a group of amazing clients. Not having a standard salary income and trusting that business will come along has been risky, but it has really brought the two of us together and has taught us to budget better for our business and ourselves. Traveling to do events and weddings out of state is a huge risk since we don’t have a relationship with their local wholesalers, but it has opened our eyes to new flowers and designs and we are so grateful.
There’s nothing that’s not risky about owning a business, but it is an amazing journey. We’re grateful everyday that we took the risk to open The Flower House.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
We truly think what sets us apart is our attention to design. We customize each arrangement, event, and wedding to the client’s preference. There’s no set “list” of items to choose from, because we truly want our work to represent the client. The two of us love pushing our creativity to the limits, so we will take on projects that push us to be better artists.
When we worked at our last company, we had to keep within the “brand” of the company. We couldn’t say no to events or arrangements. It was difficult to get to know the clients, but creating relationships with them was our favorite part of the job.
When we started The Flower House, we both agreed to not be afraid to say “no” when needed. We wanted to connect with our clients and genuinely create relationships with them. Our business is extremely personal – there’s something so special about being such a big part of a couple’s wedding day. We enjoy working with our clients and want the same in return.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We are both big foodies. We would make sure the itinerary was full of funky food choices. We’d start with breakfast at Nashville Jam Co, coffee at a fun shop we pass along the way, lunch at Green Hills Grill or Picnic Cafe, then a snack at Sambuca for happy hour with drinks, with a fun dinner at Answer or Iggy’s or Lola. And that’s just the first day. Thankfully our job is very physically demanding so we can stay in shape!!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
This was the easiest question for us to answer. When we decided to start The Flower House, we prayed that we would have clients who believe in us and help push us forward. The Lord dropped a friend and client right in our laps. He not only believes in us and supports us by having us do events and fundraisers for him, but he networks on our behalf every chance he gets. He once said that his business would be nowhere if he hadn’t been supported by someone early on, so supporting us is his way of giving back. We jokingly call him our “fairy godfather,” because we are fully aware that we wouldn’t be where we are without his support. He is truly an answer to prayer, and we are forever grateful for him and his family.
He would be so upset if he knew we were giving him a shoutout, so I’ll just say, thank you, Austin!
