We had the good fortune of connecting with D FITZ and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi D, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
There is nothing more important than simply deciding to believe in yourself. Whether it be in the arts, or in life as a whole. Believing in yourself and being yourself will take you far.
The most important decision I have made for myself as a creative is choosing to believe that I can do what I set my mind to, and not compromising who I am as a person under any circumstances whatsoever.
There is no price tag on being fully and unabashedly yourself. There is no art like your own art from your own mind. We are all art in our own ways, like an array of painted canvases.

I believe anyone can do anything they put their mind to. Whether it be physical media, writing, music, film, what have you- anyone is capable of creating.
It doesn’t have to be perfect, in fact, it’s the imperfections that make something special. Believing in my imperfections, and striving for imperfection has made me successful in the most important way.
I am happy.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My work is the product of keeping myself alive. Without my work, I would not be here.
My psychedelic mixed-media work that I fondly call “trash art” due to the often upcycled media it contains has been featured at several venues, and I am exponetially interested in showing my work in a gallery setting again soon.
My work contains repeating themes varying from body horror and other horror elements, alienesque feminine forms and political statements, with other varying chaotic themes. My pieces give the eye many points to fixate and ruminate on, cigarette butts and bottlecaps galore. The content of my art further ranges from manic nightmare fuel to psychedelic daydreams, to sensually coded revelations of my desires and my often unwarranted fears in said desires.
My commissions are currently open.
One of my dreams is to one day have a piece on display at the Frist!

Along with my mixed-media work, I also am quite fond of doing digital glitch art.
I pair glitch art with erotic poetry as an ongoing project.
I am currently working on a collection of poetry that I intend to publish.

Not only am I a mixed-media artist, I am a noise artist.
When I perform I focus on political themes, and themes such as dismantling unrealistic body standards.
I create harsh noise soundscapes with a bass guitar, looper, and a distortion amp-focusing on feedback loops. Lately I have been adding a reverb pedal to my set up. Oftentimes my soundscapes are paired with poetry. I have also experimented with adding EVP’s to harsh noise, and that has brought frighteningly pleasurable results.
I’ve been told my work is extremely meditative, and I appreciate all those that give my avant-garde work a listen.
My bandcamp is DFITZ.BANDCAMP.COM

In this current chapter of my life, I am focusing on my noise and my new solo lofi-bedroom pop project called Strawberry BunBun, named because I love strawberries and rabbits.
I just released a demo album on bandcamp called the Sodapop Flavored Demos, and y’all can check that out on bandcamp! Strawberrybunbun.bandcamp.com

My modeling work has also been a journey.
I strive to push typical modeling standards. All bodies are works of art, and everyone deserves to be photographed if they wish to be.
Anyone can be a model, all it takes is confidence. As a nonbinary model, I dream of a future where more queer people are allowed the opportunity to create on a large scale without discrimination or bias. I love what I have seen so far.
I love to create with Josh Kinds @Cap2RedStudio and Chris Scruggs @theotherchrisscruggs, they both are wonderful human beings thay have grown to be dear friends of mine. They perfectly capture my form and my comfortability with such.
I am always looking to shoot, if you are interested in working with me please send me an email at [email protected] !

In my spare time, I like to do stand-up comedy as Trash.
I am available for booking.

I began creating as early as I can remember, and my work is certainly my greatest coping mechanism throughout my entire life- especially now that I am over a year sober from alcohol and never looking back.
I got here by believing in myself every step of the way, and with the love of those around me.

The greatest challenge has been myself.
Let it be known that I am a beautiful work in progress, every day my only goal is to do better than the day before, and that I am thankful. I learned that the arts and life is a lot like gardening, and each day is a day to thrive and flourish to the best of my ability with the coming and going of the seasons.
If my story is about anything, the garden that is me looks like a strawberry plant growing out of the cracks of the cement.
It’s been a hard time, but I bear delicious art and sound berries.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them to The Frist where we would look at every single piece, and some pieces twice.
We would then go to Centennial Park to frolic, after grabbing ice-cream at Jeni’s The lavender wildberry on a waffle cone is my favorite!!
After that I would probably suggest we go find stones at Cosmic Connection that look like eachother’s eyes.
The best way to finish out the night would be catching a film at The Belcourt, or a show at Betty’s Grille or Cobra.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There’s so much I am thankful for. To quote a band I loved growing up, Days of The New, “anything is everything to me”.

I’m thankful for every single couch or floor I have crashed on. I’m thankful for every shared meal. I’m thankful for every show I’ve played, every show I’ve booked, and every show I’ve gone to as a fan.
Every time I get sent a new unreleased song from a friend I get teary-eyed.
I’m thankful for every collab, and future collabs.

I have too many individual thank you’s to list, but I would love to shoutout those that love me and my cat Punkinzboi for being the sheer driving forces that keep me going. I love y’all more than words can describe.
