Meet Hayes Hora | Publisher of Collierville Living Magazine and East Memphis Living

We had the good fortune of connecting with Hayes Hora and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hayes, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I worked for the local paper, selling print advertising and digital products. I could never retain advertisers because I had no control over the paper’s content. I knew I needed end-to-end control to create a brand-safe environment that advertisers would enjoy and appreciate. That is when I was inspired to start a free local magazine for readers supported by paid advertising. It has been a terrific journey! We just celebrated our 3rd anniversary.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My career has been a journey of passion and persistence. As the founder and publisher of Collierville Living Magazine and East Memphis Living, I have dedicated myself to promoting local businesses through positive content and storytelling. What sets us apart is our focus on locally written stories about people throughout our community, beautifully designed advertisements, and compelling narratives that genuinely resonate with our readers.
I am incredibly proud of the impact our magazines have on local businesses. Seeing the growth and success of these businesses through our features and ads is immensely rewarding. Our publications foster connections among residents and businesses.
The path to where I am today was not easy. Building a publication from the ground up required overcoming numerous challenges, from securing funding to establishing a readership through trial and error, lots of feedback, and experimentation. My commitment to quality content and community focus helped me persevere. The key to overcoming these obstacles was maintaining a clear vision and adapting to changing circumstances. Juggling everything from writing to sales, editing, and even deliveries was a lot to figure out. It took some time to find the rhythm.
One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is the importance of relationships. Building strong connections with business owners, advertisers, and readers has been crucial to our success. Another important lesson is the power of storytelling. Every business and individual has a unique story, and sharing these stories authentically has a profound impact.
I want the world to know that our brand stands for community, quality, and positive influence. Collierville Living Magazine and East Memphis Living are platforms for celebrating local culture, supporting businesses, and bringing people together. We are dedicated to enhancing community spirit through the power of the written word and visual artistry.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Collierville is a day trip by itself. I’d start by walking through the Historic town square, visiting all the stores and shops, touring the train, and enjoying a nice lunch at the Highlander Pub, Silver Caboose, or Dyer’s Cafe. During a sunny day, a lovely outdoor walk around the pond at Halley Park is always soothing. A historical tour inside the Morton Museum would add to the fun. After exploring Collierville, a trip to Memphis to see the enormous Bass Pro Shop inside the Pyramid is worth the drive. Visiting Elvis’ home in Graceland is something everyone should do. The Memphis Zoo has several new baby animals to enjoy. There are too many excellent restaurants to list for dinner. Still, I would suggest Jim’s Place Grille in Collierville for its refined dining atmosphere and high-end menu. Porch and Parlor is one of the best places in Memphis, known for delicious Wagyu beef and unique seafood options like their 1lb king crab leg.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My Dad was our first advertiser, and his faith in this project jumpstarted its success. Bill Hora is Collierville’s favorite Optometrist and our biggest fan. Secondly, the mentorship and support of Alderman Billy Patton have been instrumental in his introductions to numerous people who became sponsors of the magazine or featured articles. I am incredibly grateful for his support and willingness to advise me regarding business, finances, relationships, religion, and leadership.
