We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexa Goldie and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alexa, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
One thing that always surprises people is that as an independent artist, you are not just the artist; you wear many hats! You are the songwriter, the song pitcher, the booking agent, the social media creator, the bio writer, the graphic designer, the promoter, the distributor and so much more. People never know how much work goes into being a musician or the amount of roles we have to take on!

I am so grateful for all of the tricks and knowledge I’ve learned along the way. Learning the tricks of the trade has taught me the importance of networking, friendships within the industry and how to hustle. Every single day is a hustle, and you can’t make it in this industry without hard work and determination. It can be defeating to hear numerous no’s, however, when you get that one yes, it makes it all worth it.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have been obsessed with the idea of being a singer/songwriter since I was 5. I remember sitting my friends down when they would come over and singing them all of the songs I had written that week. When I was 10, I brought up the idea of starting to perform and with my parents support, I started performing as the lead singer for five rock bands in my hometown. Through that experience, I truly fell in love with entertaining and singing in front of an audience. Growing up listening to artists like Deana Carter, Rascal Flatts and Taylor Swift, showed me how important it is to be vulnerable with your music.

What sets me apart from others is that I’m not afraid to be different. When I get asked what artist I want to be like, I say Alexa Goldie. I most definitely take inspiration from other artists, but I know to make it in this industry, you have to be authentic! I have heard numerous times how important it is to release upbeat and happy music, but growing up, the music that made me fall in love with the country genre were the songs that told a story like “Strawberry Wine” by Deana Carter or “Every Little Thing” by Carly Pearce. If you listen to my music, the majority of it is sad, slow, country ballads; but I promise they tell a story. When going through a breakup or a tough time, music always helped me heal and move forward. My main goal is to write music that reaches and helps others. I have been overwhelmed with the amount of messages and people coming up to me after shows expressing how my songs “Bad Boy” and “He Would” have helped them; that alone makes me know that I am doing something right!

I have been focusing on music for 15 years now, and I can say that I have honestly enjoyed every minute of the journey. I’ve heard a lot of rejection, but that only fuels my fire to keep going and keep crafting my sound! It can be hard to hear no, but I’ve overcome that with knowing that if it is meant to be, it will be. Along the way, I’ve learned that if something isn’t meant to be right now, it doesn’t mean that it’s never going to happen. I remember not getting chosen to perform at a festival I had auditioned for and a week later I was named a Top 8 Semi-Finalist in the SiriusXm Top of the Country competition, which I would have had a to turn down if I had taken that festival gig…everything happens for a reason!

I want to prove to the music industry that you can have a successful career as an independent artist. I wasted so much time wishing and praying that a manager, a label or an agent would pick me and guide me. I couldn’t be more thankful for the way my music journey has worked out and how I have learned to pave my own trail. Of course I am excited for the day that I find the right team, but for now, I’m excited to keep hustling and releasing raw and real music.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Whenever I have friends or family visit me in Nashville, I always have a fully packed itinerary for them! First, after picking them up from the airport, we head straight to Nectar Cantina for smoothies and lunch. At some point during their stay, taking them to a show and the backstage tour at the Grand Ole Opry will be a must. There is something magical about the Opry that everyone feels whether they are a musician or not. Other music venues that I love to visit are the Bluebird Cafe and the Listening Room Cafe. Broadway, Printers Alley, the Gulch and 12th Ave South are all areas we will go to for shopping, eating and tourist attractions! If friends are staying for a week, I always suggest driving to Franklin or t Gatlinburg. It can be refreshing to leave the loud city life and visit the country side. I love that there is so much to see in Tennessee and everywhere you go, you feel inspired.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Jenn Bostic has been a mentor for me since I was 16. I remember hearing her music for the first time and telling my frco-writer how it was a dream of mine to write with her. A few months later, Jenn surprised me in a writing session. Since then, she has been someone I can lean on, reach out to for help and someone I call a close friend.

When I visited Nashville in September 2019, I realized that I wanted to move to Nashville and she is one of the main reasons I felt comfortable enough to make the move. Jenn has always been someone who believes in me; bringing me on stage at the Listening Room Cafe in 2019 when I had never sung in a writers round before.

It is refreshing to see someone who is so talented, be so down to earth.
