Meet Eva Leersnyder | Professional Dog Trainer, Vet Tech, and Student

We had the good fortune of connecting with Eva Leersnyder and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Eva, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I wanted to be able to branch out on my own after being trained as a professional dog trainer. I felt as if I was ready to promote myself and my business and be able to manage my funds in the process. I don’t just train dogs, but I educate owners as well and I think that is a big part in why I wanted to own my own business. I want to work with people and offer affordable, private, in-home training so that everyone could be involved and be on the same page when it came to their dog.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a student studying psychology, which helps me in training, because I can understand not only the owner more, but the relationship they have with their dog. I am able to recognize certain behaviors not only in animals, but in their owners which helps tremendously with one on one, personal dog training.
I am most proud of the fact that I decided to become a trainer and help the people and dogs that really want the help. It’s not easy to own your own business and branch out on your own, but it is definitely worth it in many ways.
Challenges come and go, it is apart of life, but it is how you react to those challenges that will affect your life.
Lessons I have learned are to be patient and give myself grace. Work hard and have fun while doing it. Learn as much as you can too, whether it be from reading or research or other people. Soak it in, gain more knowledge, understand more things.
For my business, I want people to know that we need to be our animals Kahu. We our their guardian, so we need to show them the way, the right way. That is where training comes into play.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take my friends to Waikiki and walk along the main streets by the International Market Place and the beach where the royals used to surf. Then I would take them to climb Diamond Head. Next, I would take them to Iolani Palace and Pearl Harbor.
North Shore would also be a great place to check out once we visit the coffee farm and Dole factory.
Their are a plethora of food trucks that offer great food and don’t forget to try some snow cones, garlic shrimp, and manapuas. Kalua pork is also another personal favorite of mine.
There are so many things to do in Oahu. Besides hiking and eating and shopping, there is snorkeling and diving and sunset cruises where dolphins and whales can be spotted. The vibe is amazing, the people are friendly, and the island is full of adventure.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a shoutout to my trainer and the business that helped me get started on this journey – Music City Dog Training. I also want to give a shoutout to Concord Road Animal Hospital because they always supported my dreams and efforts and I couldn’t be more thankful for them.
