We had the good fortune of connecting with Tere Gusmus and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tere, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Work life balance is a prevailing topic in the workplace and is extremely subjective. Over time and throughout various careers, I have waivered on this subject because I have found there is no true balance. If you intend to excel in your profession, there will be intrusions on your personal commitments. If you are focused on your personal life, more than likely, your professional advancement will suffer. If one side of the equation needs attention, give that time and then move forward.

I found that being as organized as possible in both settings is paramount. Good organizational skills will allow you to compartmentalize your thoughts and permit you to give your best in both arenas. When you have a block of time, use it wisely.

If you have a project to achieve, give yourself permission to thoroughly focus and complete the task. Then, when you switch gears, you know you have done your best.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I would love the world to know that my life as a content creator is far removed from my previous career as a Legal Analyst. Previous to “The Style Chase,” I worked in a highly structured corporate environment. Now, I work in free flowing artistic surroundings that allow me to see many ideas from very different vantage points. I have thoroughly enjoyed both careers. I feel the knowledge gained from my previous career led to where I am now. The corporate constraints of one position let to a craving for an artistic outlet. The most challenging aspect of this career is not the artistic element of being a content creator. It is the marketing and business side of the career.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Without a doubt, I suggest a stay at the historic Peabody Hotel. Plan to watch the Peabody’s iconic marching of the ducks and, of course, stay for cocktails in the lobby. You never know who you might see strolling through the lobby. The one restaurant I suggest to out of town guests is The Rendezvous. It is only a short walk from the Peabody Hotel. You can smell the aroma of its Memphis style bar-b-cue wafting from the grills on your way there. Of course, if you are not in the mood for bar-b-cue, there are several southern style restaurants to visit during a stroll down Beale Street. This is THE location to get a Blues Music experience. You can find live music the full length of Beale Street.
A tour of Elvis’ Graceland is a must. The home is preserved just as it was when Elvis lived there and it is now on the National Register of Historic Places. Don’t forget to tour Sun Studios where Elvis’ career began.
If you are in Memphis during NBA basketball season, try to get tickets to a Memphis Grizzlies game.
During the summer, I suggest tickets to a Live At The Garden concert located at the Memphis Botanic Garden. The Live At The Garden concert lineup never disappoints.
If you are looking for an extraordinary view of the Mississippi River, visit the observation area located at the top of the enormous Bass Pro Shop located on the river’s bank. For a closer view of the Mississippi River, walk across the river on the Big River Crossing pedestrian bridge. This is where you will have endless photo opportunities.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Oh, wow. This is difficult because there are so many people who are extremely supportive of my effort to make YouTube’s “The Style Chase” successful. All of the content created for social media platforms always requires more effort than viewers perceive. The few seconds a viewer uses to scroll through an Instagram post or the time a follower spends watching a YouTube video will never equal the time spent in that content’s production. Therefore, I think I will most definitely give a huge shoutout to those in my closest circle. These are the people who did not sign up for being back-up photographers; idea sounding boards; style consultants, and emotional support. My husband is #1. I do not recall a single moment he has not supported me…from taking photos to holding a prop at the perfect angle.
