We had the good fortune of connecting with Brandon Hodges and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brandon, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
From my earliest memories, I’ve always been drawn to expressing myself through various mediums, be it drawing, painting, or sculpture. My childhood was filled with moments of solitude and imagination, where I found comfort and joy in the act of creation. Art offered me a way to communicate, to process my experiences, and to connect with others in a way that I had never found before. My passion for art is a reflection of my desire to share joy, inspire inclusivity, and remind us all of the wonder that surrounds us, encouraging a deeper appreciation for the vibrant tapestry of life.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is a celebration of life’s vibrancy, a dialogue between the seen and the unseen, the valued and the overlooked. What sets me apart is my approach to materials and themes. I’ve always been fascinated by the potential of recycled and found objects, seeing them not as waste but as untapped sources of beauty and expression. This ethos is deeply integrated into my work, reflecting a commitment to sustainability and a deeper narrative about transformation and resilience.

I’m most proud of how my art resonates with people from all walks of life, inviting them to rediscover their inner child and embrace diversity. My journey to where I am today was far from easy. It was, and still is, filled with moments of self-doubt, financial challenges, and the task of navigating the art world as a self-taught artist. This path requires persistence, a willingness to learn from every experience, and the courage to stay true to my vision.

Overcoming challenges requires a process of continual growth and adaptation. Over time I have learned the importance of community, the value of authenticity, and the power of storytelling through art. Each obstacle I have faced was an opportunity to refine my craft and clarify my mission.

I want the world to know that my art is an invitation to look closer, to find joy and wonder in the places we least expect. Art has the power to inspire change, to heal, and to unite us by revealing our common humanity. Through my journey, I hope to encourage others to pursue their passions fearlessly, to embrace their unique voices, and to remember that it’s never too late to redefine your path.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Absolutely, I’d like to dedicate a shoutout to my mom. She’s been my rock and my safe harbor throughout my journey. Her strength, resilience, and unwavering support have been instrumental in my pursuit of art. She encouraged me to explore, to be curious, and to never shy away from pushing boundaries.

Additionally, I want to recognize the grassroots art communities and local non-profits, like the Oakland Art Library, that provide essential platforms for emerging artists. They create spaces where art is accessible to everyone, and they champion the importance of creativity in our lives. Their dedication to nurturing local talent and fostering a vibrant art scene has been incredibly inspiring and empowering.
