We had the good fortune of connecting with Charles Humphrey III and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Charles, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Beast Coast Anglers llc was formed as a result of my love of fly fishing. I started fly fishing over 30 years ago as a teenager in Greenville, NC. I have lived in Asheville, NC since 1999 and been fishing the trout streams in Western NC, Tennessee, and North Georgia as often as I can. I studied business at UNC Chapel Hill and have been in the music business professionally since 1999. As a touring bluegrass musician, I have had the opportunity to fly fish in Colorado, Montana, Idaho, Iowa, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Wyoming, Nevada, Oregon, Alaska, and Canada. With my business background and love of fly fishing it was a natural step to start my own fly fishing guide service Beast Coast Anglers llc. I use to be an ultra marathoner who started a brand Beast Coast Trail Runners. The name Beast Coast Anglers grew out of that brand. We have a great team of anglers who focus on education and adventure. It’s our goal to help each client become a better angler, while having fun and having a high chance at catching quality fish. Whether it’s enjoying great conversation, a hot grilled lunch, or learning a new fly-fishing technique, our guides are dedicated to going the extra mile! We hope to create memories that last a lifetime. Our team is truly passionate about the sport of fly-fishing and enjoys sharing that passion with our clients. Beast Coast Anglers is fully licensed, insured, and all guides are CPR – First Aid certified.

What should our readers know about your business?
I strive to make my business Beast Coast Anglers unique. We try to be more than just a company that can teach you how to fly fish. We cherish the opportunity to create friendships and bonds that will last a lifetime. In my eyes our days on earth are limited and each one is a blessing. If a client is going to take time out of their busy schedule to come and fish with us, we want it to be memorable. I truly believe that being on the river and enjoying nature with friends is one of the most rewarding ways to spend time. Its good for the soul I feel like myself and the fellow guides truly try to create a memorable and quality experience for our clients. I’ve learned that if you want to be successful you have to work hard. Believe in yourself and never give up. Every business I’ve ever been involved with, you get out of it what you put into it. Try not to compare yourself to others, and instead focus on being the best you can be at what you do be it an angler or a musician. I want the world to know that if you book a trip with us we will do everything in our power to make it fun, educational, and memorable.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I was going to design the perfect week for someone visiting, it would involve fly fishing, delicious food, and live music. We would have to spend a few days wade fishing around Western North Carolina and exploring places like Pisgah national forest. After a long day of fishing and hiking we would need to grill up some steaks before venturing out to enjoy some live Bluegrass music at one of the many local venues. Since we have a week to explore, we’d certainly have to hop on the drift boat and fly fish the Watauga and South Holston Rivers in TN. These are 2 of my favorite tail waters to float on for wild trout! No week would be complete without dipping down into North Georgia and hitting the Soque river for some truly massive trout. Fishing, fine food, and live music. That’s what I love sharing with my friends.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my grandmother Claudine Humphrey who recently passed away. Along with my parents, she has been one of the most supportive role models I have ever known.
