Meet Shelby and Rick John | S&R John Photography & Films

We had the good fortune of connecting with Shelby and Rick John and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shelby and Rick, what inspires you?
We are inspired by our couples and their wedding days! We are constantly striving to give our couples the best experience that we can, especially on their wedding day. We want our couples to be relaxed, having fun and know that we have everything handled on their wedding day. That means knowing what’s important to them, giving wedding day advice based on our experience, giving poses and prompts that get them to have fun and interact with each other in a natural way, and knowing that every wedding is different and every couple is different and letting each wedding and couple inspire new ways for us to create a fun and relaxed experience.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
We specialize in authentic wedding photography and videography, but because weddings are so intimate and emotional, we focus on how we impact the feeling of the day for the couple. Our relationships with our clients don’t feel like a transaction, they feel like friendships! We specialize in people first, then art.We’re known by our clients by how quirky and silly we can be to get them to laugh and loosen up during a session, but in the industry, we’re known for our true-to-life color and robust films.

We’re most proud of our ability to take couples who have never had a photo taken together and transfer their nervous energy into something fun and romantic on camera. We’re also proud of the care we take with each image and film. Everything we do is edited, colored, and processed by just the two of us!

What sets us apart is actually the easiest question to answer so far! Photo and film teams in the wedding industry are hard to come by, and our approach is even more boutique in the way that when you book with S&R John Photography, you are booking Shelby and Rick every time. Unlike other larger teams in the industry, we do not have secondary shooters and assistants that we send in our place.This keeps all of our photo galleries, films, and client experiences, personalized, consistent, and of the highest quality that we can produce.

We got to where we are today by staying true to ourselves and our art and just focusing on our couples. It’s hard in this industry when you see so many other photographers and videographers on social media that may get more likes than you, or post more often, or have more followers, but at the end of the day we remind ourselves that not everything on social media is what it seems and we can’t take every wedding and not every couple is the right fit for us. So we do our best to just focus on our couples and our art and not fall into the comparison trap of social media.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
So we’re based out of Memphis, TN, but we absolutely adore Nashville! Some of our favorite spots are The Parthenon, and Centennial Park, the pedestrian bridge over the river and basically anywhere downtown! When we are there visiting for fun or shooting weddings one of our favorite places to eat is Maggiano’s Little Italy, so good!!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people who deserve credit for our success, but truly the people who we are most thankful for are our first few couples who trusted us to photograph and film their weddings when we were first starting out. The ones who saw that we were new and that we barely knew what we were doing but that we had the seedlings of talent and a true passion to pursue our dreams. So many of our friends, friends in the industry, and family have also been so supportive and encouraging as well, but our first few wedding couples will always hold a special place in our hearts.
