We had the good fortune of connecting with Kalyn Nelson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kalyn, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?

I have always been fascinated by the concept of happiness. Like most people, I have been in pursuit of obtaining happiness in many different ways for as long as I can remember. As a child, we might equate ice cream with happiness. We have all probably thought that money could buy us happiness at some point too.

With age, I have concluded that happiness is not just a thing, or even an end goal that can be achieved, but rather a rotation of what I call “glimmers” – both small and big moments in our every day life that give us the experiences of joy, safety, connection or meaning. It could be as small as the feeling of getting a front row parking spot on a busy day the the mall. Maybe it’s an unexpected phone call from a friend who shares amazing news about a promotion at work. It could also be as big as holding your brand new baby. Glimmers are rotated in with sadness and grief and all of the other universal human experiences and emotions. Therefore, happiness is actually something that can be felt every day rather than sought after as an elusive goal to achieve.

One of those recurring happiness glimmers in my life is the privilege I feel impacting someone’s home life through my work with Kalyn Nelson Interiors. Most of my clients are either building their dream home or remodeling a home that they plan to spend many more years in. It is truly amazing to see these people experience the warmth of being in a home that reflects who they are and what makes them feel comfortable and smile when they walk in the front door. I feel a strong sense of meaning from what I do, because I know how much my work impacts a huge part of their life. My clients are also one of the most common ways I feel a sense of connection, because many of these people truly become friends after all the time I spend getting to know them and their family!

Another recurring glimmer for me is being around my own family. My husband is so supportive of my business goals and encourages me constantly. We also have two young children (ages 4 and 7) who always find ways to make me laugh through the challenges of parenting. It makes me feel proud that they will be able to grow up watching my hard work and the good things that blossom in life from not giving up!

What should our readers know about your business?

Kalyn Nelson Interiors was born as the result of my passion for helping people feel excited about living in their home. I also wanted a better work-life balance so I could spend more time at home with my kids. Of course there are many challenges with owning a business, but I truly wouldn’t want it any other way. I take so much pride in being a business owner AND a mom! It’s the best of both worlds.

My goal is to forever be learning new ways to improve the lives of my clients. I have loved growing my business over the past 7 years and I love the challenge that each new project brings. I will always be grateful for the people who have trusted me to make their dreams come true.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

Seeing a concert at the Ryman is a must! The architecture is so inspiring.

Gas Lamp Antique Mall is incredible if you’re into vintage home finds.

S.A.T.C.O will forever be my favorite taco place in Nashville. It’s partially because of the nostalgia from my Belmont University days.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I truly could not do this without the full, unwavering support of my husband, Alex! Also everyone else in my circle of family and friends who have encouraged me to never give up on my dreams.
