Meet Alexis Washington | Custom Embroidery & Seamstress

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexis Washington and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexis, we’d love to hear more about your end-goal, professionally.
My end goal is to enjoy the the fruits of my labor and to be a success story to others. I desire to have a large embroidery/sewing shop with a team of employees who share the same passion for sewing as I do. My definition of success is running a business and also having time to enjoy my life and my loved ones. Success to me is the ability to support my family while doing what I love, on my time. I want to be the women/mom who wakes up each day and still has that fire and love for my business.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I was actually an employee of Joann Fabric and Craft Store for many years. This is how my business came about. I mostly worked in the Calico fabric quilting area with all of this gorgeous fabric. At the time, Joann offered classes to employees for half off and I took advantage. I learned to sew and since then, I have been sewing non-stop. Sewing has taught me to be patient and kind to myself, because mistakes are bound to happen but it’s okay, just keep going. The first two items I made were a pillow case and blouse. I started posting to social media and began accepting customers. I started with baby blankets and now I can pretty much make anything! I’ll be teaching sewing classes this year and my message to my students will be, to be patient and kind to yourself along this journey.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting the area and I wanted to show them a good time, the first place we’d visit is Shelby Farms Park. I love the outdoors and the scenery here. Another place would be Top Golf. The atmosphere and food is great, it’s so fun for competitive folk, like myself! Slave Haven is very educational and dear to me. The Big River Crossing is soo peaceful for a long walk! We’d catch a grizzlies game! Lastly, the Cooper Young area is always a vibe, there’s always something to do!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to give credit to my lovely mother, Shirley Williams. Before her passing, my mom and I had many conversations about my dreams and she believed in me. My mother is where I get my drive and resiliency from. She was kind enough to purchase most of the machines that are necessary for my business. It’s a great feeling to go after your dreams and have your parent supporting and cheering for you all the way. I’m so grateful for her encouragement, pushing me to continue doing what I love. This one’s for you MOM❤️
